James Toney is a very talented boxer. He'd do very well in head to head match ups at 160 & 168. However he's not the greatest ever.

the 2003 Toney that destroyed (albeit shot) Holyfield would beat the **** out of every heavyweight contender today.

    Really?

And there was me thinking, he was a disgraceful steroid cheat... :huh

I wouldn't be surprised if this fat overrated **** spent his entire pro career juiced up to the eyeballs..

one of the most asthetically pleasing fighters you could ever watch.

also one of the most complete, he had it all....speed, power, timing, defense, toughness, chin.

if toney had a drive and a mayweather work ethic he woulda been a top 20 ATG

I thought the PED scandal was due to him having a torn bicep then accepting the Ruiz fight on somewhat short notice, so he needed the accelerated healing? Watching beat Jones beat Ruiz then watching Toney destroy Ruiz was something. PEDs don't give you a chin and great countering skills.

Not many people were able to stand toe to toe with a prime Samuel Peter, hold their ground, take his shots and counter the hell out of him, despite not having heavy weight power.

Add to it he only had 33 amateur fights, started when he 15, turned pro at 20. It's hard to say he didn't have discipline he sparred all the time, just didn't do the cardio training consistently. If he had showed up in top form, he had the natural talent to be a top 20 all time.

Toney is a pure boxer that PED **** gets blown way out of proportion .Every boxer right now can take what ever they wanted and they still wouldn't come close to his skill in the ring !

Is there a better advertisement against getting your kids into boxing than Pepper and Freddie Roach. Both guys are in bad shape...

Toney could've been riods shooting out of his eyes and it would'nt have made a difference in his career. Every fight Toney ever won it was from pure skill. He never just ran through guys with devasting power. He was never blindingly fast. Or had amazing stamina, but he was a born fighter and he knew how to fight when he was dead on his feet. Go look back at some of his fights even at 160 and he would be completely gone late in some fights but could still react and defend and comeback. He also had a chin of a god and balls bigger then most fighters in history. He knew how to react and move in the ring and the only thing juice ever did for Toney was so his fat ass could cheat in training late in his career and he still came into fights fat as **** hardly able to move over his own fat and still schooled some of these heavyweights and he did it all with SKILL. And there is not a drug in the world that can give you the boxing skills James Toney had.

Great post pal. He lacked dedication and his output was low at times but he has very skilled.

Great defense, inside game and a very good puncher too. What a chin this man has too. Probably the best of all time in that department.

His fights with Nunn and Jirov were sensational wins.:happy

Toney and Pep are close friends, However Pep can be a fan of james as well no rules against that. James at his best would probably be the best Heavyweight P4P however James ****ed it up himself with PEDs and with his poor work ethic.
That said Pepper is like that he is a die hard, he loves Hopkins just as much Pepper is an old school throw back fighter, he loves to see people fight none of this touch and go **** and James and Hopkins both fit that bill they fight on the inside with you and on the inside both guys are animals
