"Joe Louis is the greatest heavyweight champion of all time. Rocky Marciano is second only to Louis. Where do I rate Ali? Somewhere below me. I beat him, and if I could beat him, no doubt Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano could have beaten him." -- Joe Frazier But Ali beats all three of them in a talk contest.
Yeah whatever. Keep saying that and it will become the truth. It looks like Ali didn't mind fighting old guys himself. See below. Here are just a few examples of Marciano's big fights. Keep in mind that he was in his early 30s during these fights. Name Born Record Age During Fight Note Rocky Marciano 9/1/1923 49-0 Archie Moore 12/13/1916 114-19-8 38 Fought Ali 7 years later Don Cockell 9/22/1928 66-11-1 32 Ezzard Charles 7/7/1921 83-11-1 33 Roland LaStarza 5/12/1927 53-3-0 26 Jersey Joe Walcott 1/31/1914 51-18-2 37 Harry Mathews 12/9/1922 90-7-6 29 Joe Louis 5/13/1914 66-3 37
Aye. Also, probably no great coincidence that Frazier, Marciano and Louis were all highly offensive fighters with the same seek-and-destroy mindset as Frazier. Fighters do tend to give the most kudos to the guys who fight the most like themselves or have the same mentalities. That's why Ali liked the Jack Johnsons and Tyson liked the Dempseys and so on and so forth.
Too bad Ali is greater than all 3. Ali only lost AFTER they took 3 years from him. He still beat Frazier twice.
I'm not a boxing historian so don't take me as such but who could he have fought apart from who he did, I thought he fought the best competition that was available at that time.
Well, he fought the number one contender all but once and that was when he took a break with the number two contender, so I think it's pretty well demonstrated he fought exactly the best available.
As champion, he sealed his ATG status. The only problem is that he fought all of 8 fighters rated in the top ten over the entirety of his career. Two of them would never fight again afterwards. Two others were much better light heavyweights (and one had fittingly 175 bouts at the time) while the others draw nary a mention in historical circles. :think
Cus had no intentions of putting Floyd in there. He was waiting for Rocky to age or retire. Rocky would've knocked Patterson out... zero doubt.
That logic isn't horrible bad, if Frazier rated Marciano above himself. If he thinks Ali can just barely nudge out a win over himself, then a better version of himself with more gas in the tank (Marciano nigh unlimited stamina and two handed as comparable to Fraziers left). Although there are tendencies to each fighter that clearly make them different.. they are very comparable...
