True, he did not only competed but held his own with second generation after his, if he stayed until 80s with no layoff he would retire with very good resume, beating all of the 80s guys.
Young was unique in his way. A defensive cutie and their fight basically took place in a sauna. Not ideal conditions for a high energy, total power fighter (with a dodgy tank) like George was at that time. I’d back George at his best against any 80’s guys ie Dokes, Weaver, Bonecrusher, Page, Cooney, Witherspoon etc. He was flat out better than any of them but we don’t know how his career would have transpired without the layoff. He found an inner fortitude during the layoff despite losing his explosiveness. It’s interesting to speculate but we’ll never really know.
