Maybe not in rounds, but certainly equally competitive. And if more people knew how to score rounds properly, more people would have had Perez-Mares a draw. Virtually everyone scored it 115-113 for Mares but in so doing gave him the 9th round. Watch that round. Yonnhy lands the better shots for two and a half minutes, before Abner came on very strong in the last thirty seconds. Mares arguably did better work in that short span of time than Perez did in the whole big chunk of the round that preceded it, but the entire round should be taken into account...not a mere fraction of it (in this case a sixth of it). Switch the 9th to a Perez round on 99% of people's scorecards and 115-113 Mares becomes 114-114 (like myself and two judges had it).
Agbeko being the mandatory challenger, you can't complain much about that. We'll see after Perez-Agbeko rematch.
Exactly. Taking a tough fight in granting a rematch to the person you won the title from, being called ducking? Is this the Twilight Zone? Let King Kong have his deserved crack first. He at least once held the belt, so it's only fair he get a chance to acquit himself in trying to seize it back ahead of a contender. Then the contender who gave a good account of himself in the early rounds (and swept the last three) can and should take the winner of Perez-Agbeko II. If the winner of Perez-Agbeko II doesn't face Mares next, THEN we can speak of ducking.
I repeat "HIS MANDATORY". Do you know what 'mandatory' means. It means he has to fight him or risk losing the belt. I assume you want Mares to win the title if/when he does eventually fight Perez again? BTW I had Mares ahead by 3 rounds and that fight made me a fan.
If Perez's camp wanted to rematch Mares right away FOR THE BELT it could happen. Let's not pretend it's NOT all about politics. To act like Perez-Mares II couldn't happen without belt ramifications is ridiculous. You're putting too much stock into 'mandatory'.
I'm ahead of the game, chief. It's painfully obvious Perez doesn't want to fight Mares again by this move. I guess you like being an ostrich.
LordSharpshire, two questions: 1) Did you see what I was saying about the very close 9th round, how swinging that the other way on most people's cards makes it a draw? Do you see how 114-114 wasn't an unreasonable score to arrive at, despite Abner seizing the momentum toward the end of the fight and "appearing" to have taken full control as Perez did in the middle (or even greater control, although that doesn't matter on a 10-point must system)? 2) If Perez beats Agbeko and then immediately grants another rematch to Mares, what will you think then?
fight was close, but the only man that deserve to win was Mares, always liked the way that kid fought. The way he adjusted and closed strong really impressed me. I n the middle of the fight when Perez was taking over i was thinking to myself ...."maybe he is not as good as i thought". But after he closed the show, i was like DAMN, TOUGH KID with good BOXING SKILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Definitely proved to be a mexican fighter.
I'm guessing that Agbeko established his mandatory status way before the Perez-Mares fight. That is Agbeko to fight the winner of Perez-Mares. Since the belt is still with Perez then Perez has to fight the mandatory challenger Agbeko.
Nobody won though, so no harm no foul. Mares certainly didn't deserve to lose - and he didn't. If you score round-by-round on a 10-point must system, and score a full three minutes of every round...then Perez didn't deserve to lose either. The judges (the majority of them) got this one exactly right.
