Yeah, beating people's favorite fighters gets you many detractors. The only thing with his retirement is that it gives the feeling that he could achieved so much more. But perhaps not. He knows his body best after all.
I don't rate Ward much like some do, I think him and his opponents were dull and mediocre relatively. But his retirement is nicely timed. He finished up as a champion at 175. He's been champion at 168. He was unbeaten in both divisions. It's nice way to leave the sport.
Joe Calzaghe timed it well, 2 knockdowns in his last 2 fights at a higher weight showed he made the right decision. Lewis made the correct call not giving Vitali a rematch. Assuming he stays retired, Ward has made a very good decision, health wise. He definitely has more in the tank. Carl Froch was another who made a good decision after Groves. Obviously Floyd, nailed it really.
I am going to say no to Jeffries. He retired at his absolute peak, and he could have enhanced his legacy significantly, even if he had continued to draw the color line. I would not put Gene Tunney on the list for the same reason.
