Here we have an up-start "Prince" Charles Williams in his last loss in a 1984 bout that took place in the waning months of the year, early November to be specific. This is before rising to the top of the division and becoming one of the premiere light heavyweights of the world in the mid 80's to mid 1990's, not losing another fight despite plenty of globe trotting to fight, for almost a decade after this bout. He's only

His opponent, 1972 Olympic Bronze Medalist, 40 fight veteran Marvin Johnson is here 30 years old, and in my experience, perfectly seasoned. He's very much a member of the previous generation of light heavyweights as opposed to active crop of the time. He's been in several hard fights, four in which he was stopped, but he's never stopped learning and honing his craft. Three of those stoppages come against light heavyweights whom are consensus shoo ins on top ten all time great lists of the weight.

A fight I've been wanting to show off for a while but haven't found the time, here's a 50 fight, battle hardened, 27 year old Antonio Avelar meeting next generation star young Wilfredo Vasquez, all the way up at 118 pounds in the last win of Avelar's career. Odd because Avelar never fought this high in weight and was very much a light flyweight, 112 pounder.

To summarize, It's the missing link of the Mexico-Puerto Ruerto series of great fights. A terrific fight with one of the most brutal fifth rounds I can remember. It is absolutely surreal that Avelar survives the knock down and dozens of successive right hand bombs in the fifth round... he had been stopped, prior to this fight, eight times. I cannot imagine what those eight people must have done to him to manage the feat. The will to turn the tables like the does... viva Mexico! is all I really have to say. One of the best fights I've watched in the past several years.

Actually, just about a perfect example of what I'm talking about. Upsets are usually a perfect storm, or a combination of a series of reasons... but some really come down to just how underrated experience is in a fighter.
