This does seem complex for a few people, but generally you don't win rounds if you don't hit your opponent. Valuev landed a handful of punches. Haye didn't throw many but most of them landed. He controlled the fight and he won.

It may not have been exciting, but it was effective. If he's lost it would have been a robbery.

 

Granted it was close, haye won it IMO in the last round. I get why people thought he lost and I get why people don't respect the manner of the victory. But if you put aside going gung ho for the victory, I admire the discipline in the performance and execution of the game plan. Haye however does need to put on a more convincing display, where he is committing to the fight and not stealing rounds. I want to see him try and take someones head off. He has some convincing to do for people to accept him. He needs to dominate a legit title holder. He has to put it all on the line - I agree. Just would have been ****ing mental to do so, and possibly lose it all having not fought a klitchko.
Any kind of legacy haye wants will come from fighting one of the brothers. In any fight against either of them it is fair to say that haye should stand with them for a more consistent period of time and try and land bombs. Anything less will mean he will go down as a heavy weight pyssy cat. But against valuev, stand and trade tactics, like I have said would have been boxing suicide.

 

I loved when Valuev started shadowboxing in middle of rounds because the only thing he could hit was air.

Me aswel. I really honestly believed that if anyone could give him a run for his money it would be Marquez.

 

Definitely it was very hard to watch it was nice that even at a much heavier weight than marquez is used to mayweather still wouldnt come in at the correct weight

 

Mark Johnson is borderline great IMO. And that win over an undefeated Montiel is very underrated seeing what Montiel went on to do. By the time he fought Marquez he was past his best. It's a shame he didn't have a defining fight and a few more vintage performances.

 

Yeah, he was a very good fighter. The fact that Rafael Marquez has two wins over him, as well as a clean stoppage over Tim Austin, shows you what a beast Rafa was at Bantamweight.

Saying that, I think Rafa was really knocking the stuffing out of him at the end of their second contest, and that Mark was near the end of his resouces by this point in his career.

He was a clear underdog going into the Montiel fight. It was supposed to be Montiel's coming out party, and was even screened over here as delayed coverage on a Sunday night (terrestrial TV as well, if my memory serves me correctly). A peak, focused Montiel would have taken the victory IMO. But he just seemed to freeze on this night, never seemed to get out of first gear. I suppose you could make the case for a bad style match-up, but it didn't seem that way to me - it just looked like Montiel wasn't interested for whatever reason.

Johnson had a good win after that, stopping Bolanos early, but then Choco Hernandez out-hustled and stopped him.

A bad day at the office for Fernando would be my overall verdict on the Johnson defence. Of course he went some way to setting the record straight by brutalising poor Choco with body shots to retake the title, and hasn't looked back since (apart from the hiccup against Gonzalez).
