He was *could be* pretty boring over all. Many fans are probably more familiar with his highlight reels than his fights.

With that said, IMO* his style of defense is still much more entertaining than other defense-first fighters (Ie Devin Haney and Shakur Stevenson, who lack his flash and willingness for combination punching)

Watching his fights today I find it hard to understand the negativity. He was not like later day PBF and scored a punch every 30 seconds and stayed on his bike between, he threw hands. He put beat downs on Ramirez, Haugen and Nelson and stayed in the pocked with Chavez and McGirt for long spells. He just didn't have that KO power, and with Tyson and Chavez being the box office stars of the day I guess that was a requirement.

He'd be hated by the fools today, likley called a runner. But he didn't run, he was in the pocket in front of his opponents. I loved watching him fight back in the day

He wasn't my favorite boxer, certainly, but I do respect his amazing abilities.

What I didn't like about him was the constant showboating, particularly against overmatched opponents. Very unsportsmanlike.

Not even close. He threw a lot of punches and stood his ground. He moved around but could also stand in trade if he needed to. Sure he can have some dull fights every now and then (what fighters didn't have a boring fight) but for the most part he was awesome to watch.

Pernell wasn't boring, and if he was it wasn't for the reasons given. Imagine a runner landing 500+ punches in a championship fight or landing 6 times the weight class average for jabs landed.
Not that they are in the same class at all, but Pernell was just going through what Shakur Stevenson goes through nowadays - one or two lousy performances being used to beat you for as long as you fought. What I've come to realize with fighters like Pernell and by extension Shakur is that their fights are really uncompetitive. There's barely anything they are overcoming at any point - they are not losing early rounds to make reads or throwing caution to the wind to make up for being behind on the cards. They walk in and win nearly every round - whether they circle behind the jab, fight on the inside or counter at mid range. The one constant is that their opponents can't catch them clean and that seems to be what's boring.

He was a man of weak character. How many of you remember what he did to his own mother?

Ex-Millionaire Boxer 'Sweet Pea' Whitaker Says Evicting Mom Is 'Beautiful Moment'

    https://abcnews.go.com/US/millionaire-boxer-evicting-mom-beautiful-moment/story?id=22699214

In 2003 he was sentenced to 27 months in prison for repeated probation violations, including for bringing cocaine to a Virginia Beach courtroom while reportedly answering a traffic complaint.

He later won a court battle to evict his mother from her Norfolk home, which he had purchased as a gift, saying he owed taxes and needed the money.

Lol wtf is this thread? Pernell had skill, he was a complete fighter. Could fight going forward, backward and side to side. He was always in the pocket. The type of people that call him boring are the type that would get more fun out of UFC, BKFC or Powerslap, they just want violence and thats it.

Sweet Pea is far from boring
