By 1981, the time of the second Hagler fight, Antuofermo had really slipped. If I remember correctly, he was getting tagged by a lot of shots he would have slipped a year or two earlier.
I don't think Whitaker looked particularly good against Vasquez, but I don't think he'd get mauled in this one. As said, Vito had slipped by this point. Then again, it's not really comparable to the Vazquez matchup because Vazquez was a bit more patient in his pressure-punching approach than the rough-housing Vito. Unless someone can offer a sober case for Pea I'm gonna have to favor Vito, albeit narrowly. Provided the fight's at 154, that is. **** it, 50-50. Now how ya gonna act?
These kind of threads make me shake my head. I've seen so many "If Meldrick Taylor weighed 160 pounds, how would he do against Marvin Hagler" threads I can't even count 'em. Seriously, what the ****.....
Ridiculous as the match-up may sound with Vito having been a world middleweight champion, he was never much more than a junior middleweight in truth. A 5'8, 155 pound man with a 68" reach wouldn't completely overwhelm Whitaker with size. We saw that in the Vasquez fight.
good post and di, this is a fair question:good i don't know a ton about vito the mosquito but i think history has shown us not to discount a BRILLIANT lower weight fighter against a very good, bigger fighter vito was not a tremendous hitter but he was a swarmer (from my understanding). he fought the fight of his life in the draw against hagler but even assuming he shows that kind of form again, whitaker was almost impossible to pin down, even at 147 and above i honestly see this as 60/40 to whitaker
Vito would be like a net and tie Whittaker up making it an ugly maul, and with Vito, once they untangle him and Whittaker, getting the nod.
