Errol Spence did what he had to do against Danny Garcia on Saturday night, poking him with the right jab, as Garcia likes to swap punches. And agreed it should be 15 rounds, people still suffer fatalities in the ring at even 12 rounds. But if these two had ever met, close fight but Pernell Sweet Pea Whittaker takes it on points, too elusive for Errol.
Spence's only chance would be if we're talking about Whitaker any time after parting ways with George Benton and the Vasquez fight where he won his 154 lb title soon after. To me, those two events pretty much signalled the end of Pea's peak and if the likes of Rivera and Hurtado can almost pull it off, you can't rule out Spence (especially as he'd likely have a decent weight advantage on the night) pushing and clubbing a slightly slower, less active and more flat-footed Whitaker around to a close decision. Spence is a pretty tasty body puncher himself and wouldn't be fazed by Whitaker's arsenal. Might only be 60:40 in Whitaker's favour under those circumstances. But if it's the Whitaker of the McGirt and Chavez fights? Forget it. Too sharp, busy and elusive for Spence, who as others have said seems to get a little overrated from a technical point of view for my money. Whitaker trimmed his array of shots down from 1995 onwards but in those fights he didn't mind duking it out in close, went downstairs like a demon and was alert throughout each contest. I think he'd even surprise Spence with his strength along the way to a big decision win.
