At WW, could the Lone Star Cobra give Sweet Pea fits with his power, speed, and technical skills? I probably might be in the minority but I really believe that a prime Curry would have been able to beat Whitaker convincingly using skills alone. At his best he was brilliant and showed that he was great against pure boxers. But that's just me.
I'll go with Whitaker, but not with a lot of confidance. Curry is bigger, and for a very short period of time was as good as anyone has been.
Curry by ko ....Whitaker was a very good boxer but a poor puncher , prime Curry way too powerful for sweet pea
A Prime Trindad couldn't KO a well past his prime coke'd up Pea... yet I'm supposed to believe Curry would? You jest right?
Too much is made of Whitaker at 147. He was not a welterweight. I don't care what titles he held, he was diminished at the weight. Emile Griffith and Carmen Basilio were better welters than they were middles, it's just the way it is. Whitaker's comp. at 147 was nothing to write home about. McGirt, Chavez, Hurtado, Rodriguez were all blown up jr. welters. I think the only true welters Pea fought were Jacobs, Rivera, DeLaHoya and Trinidad and the first two weren't much. I don't want to have the memory of Pea sprawled on the canvas against McGirt, Rivera, Hurtado (twice), Vasquez and Trinidad or scraping by on split decisions. I want to remember him outclassing Haugen, Nelson, Mayweather and Ramirez at his true weight class - 135. Curry would eat him up at welter. He was a true welter and knew how to use his size to his advantage. This is a horrible match. Give me a matchup with Pea against a true 135 lber and then we'll talk. Scartissue
I can't see how Curry could easily defeat the Whitaker who fought McGirt in the rematch, Chavez, and De La Hoya. Infact, I think it's absurd to come to such a conclusion as Whitaker wasn't stopped at the weight and, when well past his prime he took murderous punches from a prime Trinidad. And he hit far harder than Curry at 147. Whitaker's defense was still very good at 147. He wasn't as sharp and quick as he was at 135 but still damn effective. And you mentioned the knockdowns. They weren't knockdowns where he was seriously hurt, outwith the Trinidad ones. They were so tame that any person with some decent judgement would see that he was clipped around the top of the head or slightly off balance. Most of Whitaker's knockdowns usually happened through being sloppy for a short period of time and getting clipped or bending low. Legitimate knockdowns, yes? Alarming knockdowns? Usually not.
You need to watch the Hurtado fight again. There was nothing about bending low or just getting clipped there. And that was Hurtado, the blown up jr welter who moved up to fight for the 147 lb. title and who promptly moved back down to his true weight class where he was rated. This is not to denigrate Pea. I'm only saying he was fighting out of his weight class - seeing a manner of success against ordinary or small opeonents - but was in no way a true welter. The same can be said for Duran when he moved to 147. The punches he KO'd lightweights with were bouncing off of the welters. I think the Curry of the Jones or McCrory fight would have been too much for Pea. I also think Curry would have taken Trinidad. Curry had the entire package at 147.
Debatable imo. With Tito it was a more obvious trait because he had less strings in the bow and we got to see him carry it up in weight while still good a lot more than we did the Lone Star Chandelier, but their power was fairly comparable against similar quality opposition imo.
Trinidad hit much harder than Curry......Not even debatable. Trinidad's power is closer to that of Hearns, than it is Curry.
