I definitely think Tito had the heavier hands. Curry's accuracy and sharpness made him a pretty formidable offensive unit though... Whitaker will have his moments, but it's a very tough ask to beat a peak Curry when you have minimal power, not to mention height, reach and weight disadvantages.
I'd say Hearns>>>>>>>>>Tito>>Curry for raw heavy handed power... the latter two equal or slightly reversed for overall punching efficiency. Only a vulgar character unwise to the subtleties of the sport would suggest a major non debatable gap in Welter power:yepSomeone who fell hook line and sinker for the Tito powerhookmonster hype. Just like only someone who fell right in line with the over the top Curry invincible technician mid-80s vibe would give Tito no chance of tracking him down.
If is a very bad style for Pernell. Pernell was greater, but if Donald is prime and solid at welt? He could win a split decision.
Good match-up. Tough to call. I'll go with Pete to eeke out a decision. He was more versatile and creative with his punches than Curry. For all his brillience Curry had a much more predictable pattern. His jab although very good wasn't as creative as Pete's jab which is one of the best i've ever seen. Pernell establishes his jab and scores enough to get the job done. Moments of brillience from Curry but not enough to beat say the Whitaker of the second McGirt fight, which is probably the last vintage Whitaker performance before the Barry White started to set in. I actually think it'd be similar to that but MUCH more competitive, with Whitaker getting caught quite a bit, maybe even tasting the canvas as he was more flat-footed at welterweight and thus open to a few silly lead rights, but i would be fairly confident in picking him to win this type of match-up. I think Pernell would just about get the better of the 'countering the counters' game at close and mid range and Curry would struggle with Pernell's fighting off centre and angles as much as Pernell would struggle with Curry's style. Also i think people put too much stock on Pernell's 'lack of power'. He had enough to get people's respect. His punches were super accurate and his body work was insane and really underrated, as was his strength in the pocket. NEVER allowed himself to be walked down and there's a reason for that. I don't really see this as a tougher fight than the De La Hoya one at the time he faced Oscar. I have to go with the more reliable guy here, who did it time and time again. A Terry Norris fight would've been a tougher fight for him imo. But arguements can be made for Curry here, no doubt about it.
Anyone know what Curry did against southpaws? I think he beat Adolfo Viruet on the way up, nice win I guess but not a lefty who presents near the puzzle that Sweet Pea does. Emmett Linton ended Curry’s career but he was on the downside by then and of course Nunn handled him at middle. I’m not sure Curry is equipped to handle a slick Whitaker. I’ll go with Pea by close decision.
