A Journeyman who knocked out Wilfredo Gomez and held a title. Who did Carlos Hernandez beat again?

If Whitaker wasn't a unified champ, (as Floyd wasn't) a Poli Diaz could have held a strap potentially.

This just proves you don't know what you're talking about. Freddie Pendleton knocked our champions Roger Mayweather, Livingstone Bramble, Tony Lopez, held Frankie Randall to a draw and beat Jorge Paez and Tracy Spann. Please tell me what Augustus has done to remotely compare to this?

A gatekeeper who held titles in two weight divisions and beat champions Sammy Serrano, Vinny Pazienza, Rene Arredondo, Livingstone Bramble as well as beating the likes of Harold Brazier, Terrence Alli and Rodolfo Gonzalez (who are really the Chop Chop level fighters).

Floyd's body of work from 130-140 is not better than Whitaker's work at 135 imo.

Whitaker was known for being a ****, wanting to torture opponents rather than putting them out of their misery. You can clearly see this if you watch his fights. He could have stopped Pineda after the body shot that dropped and winded him if he went in for the kill, but decided to hang back and just batter him to a one sided points win. Look at him in the last round with Harold Brazier just playing around and having him in a position to stop him, but simply smiling and taking a step back to allow Brazier to recover. Look at the second McGirt fight, Whitaker basically slows Buddy down to a crawl and then plays around in the last two rounds rather than finishing him off. Whitaker rarely went for a knockout. He was more intent on showcasing his superiority in skill and mentally owning fighters than physically beating them. Which is not to say that he couldn't when he needed to. Check the Hurtado fight for that. Heck check the 7th round of the Tito-Whitaker fight when Pea was but a shell of himself.

It's arguable that Floyd has more power, but more strength? Never.

It didn't help when the ref MADE Hatton take a step back every time he got close to Floyd. Hardly the case when he fought Tszyu. Tszyu was mauled with Hatton's hugging and hitting, and lost the little stamina he had at 36 years old and much of the snap to his shots.

Whitaker basically moved up two weight divisions in 18 months and walked right up to Boddy and engaged in a technical battle in the trenches. As Larry Merchant said "if this is chess, boy it is violent chess".

He made a valiant stand in the 11th round, but still lost it as Castillo outlanded him. That took some bravery from Floyd, but he certainly didn't get the best of it.

Not a bad list for sweet pea, Azumah NelsoN, Ramirez, Julio Cezar Chavez, Roger Mayweather, Greg Haugen, James McGirt, .... 10 years of fighting great fighters. Those guy's on your list don't even come close to how great Pernell was. Note i don't include Oscar or Tito ? It's a timing thing, the prime of a fighter that counts, NOT BIG NAMES- BIG LIGHTS.

Well, SS beat me to it, and probably said it better than I could've anyway, so I don't know what there is to add without being flat out redundant.

    I'll await DR's responses though.

Whitaker maybe the best defensive fighter ever. Mayweather's offense wouldn't be much of a factor.
