Whitaker's trickiness and speed was his signature. Jorge Paez was like that too, but he got owned by Whitaker, but then again Paez may have been a little passed his prime then when they fought, and hence slower. Whitaker's trickiness was never adopted by later boxers for some reason. All boxers these days prefer to learn effective methods rather than resorting to tricks. Only when boxers become older veterans like Joel Casamayor that you start resorting to some trickery. But trickery as an integral part of one's style is something rare, and I believe Whitaker had that throughout his career.
When both fought Chavez...Camacho was further from his best years. It would have been a totally different fight had they met in the early to mid 80's when Camacho was considered a top pound for pounder. By that point he had lost to Greg Haugen and was losing speed and had adapted a negative style. Whitaker wasnt in his prime either but was closer to it than Camacho was when facing Chavez so I dont think those fights have any indication of what happens if these two fought prime for prime
Those are good points, but they still don't explain the legendary sparring session between an amateur Whitaker and the same prime Camacho of which you speak, as the session was said by Steward and confirmed by Whitaker to have taken place in 1983.
Camacho had faster handspeed. Whitaker was quicker in terms of reflexes(defensive, counter-punching, etc). Whitaker vs Ramirez [YT]ROJEclbrapU[/YT] Camacho vs Ramirez [YT]mDed-70Wsnw[/YT]
I pay little attention to boxing folklore and sparring sessions. Too many conditions come into play. Were both fighters in shape, were they takng it easy, is there available footage, I dont go by hearsay. I didnt see it so I cant comment. A sparring session and a championship fight is two different things.
I though that for some reason Whitaker was faster. When people talk about speed I always hear how fast he was (sounded like he was as or almost as fast as Floyd), so i though that meant his hands. And almost no one ever talked about Camacho. Yes Im kinda new to boxing. I a big mma fan and now starting to like boxing more and more(for the last year or 2)
Hector was very much underrated..(people just hated his antics) Faster hands than Pea and but not as elusive..This is one for "sweet science" enthusiasts. As for Manny Steward I cant believe anything this guy says.. He probably saw it just the way he expected it to go down
