I'd take Armstrong by SD, his aggression being the difference in an otherwise even battle; but it's a tough call.
Armstrong didn't have the footspeed to consistently get to Whitaker enough to win a decision over 12, IMO. I'd favor Pea in a fight that he more or less controls with his skills off the backfoot. Over 12 rounds, probably 8-4. This isn't a detriment to, or comparison with Armstrong or any other pressure fighter, just how I see him matching up with Pernell. Footspeed is key here.
whitaker would win a decision just too fast on his feet three or four jabs and gone then armstrong would have get set again ,whitaker would have to be at his very best though
If Armstrong maintains his optimal distance throughout he will win, but i can't see it being consistently kept up. Which means very close decision win for either man. I'll take Pernell as it is, but ultra close decision.
Armstrong by close 15 rd UD for me, 12 rds would be much closer but both men fought 15 & my rule is... if both have went 15 before then they can go 15 with each other in my mythical fights, I only say 12 when 1 or none has gone 15 before. Ive explained in another thread that I think Armstrong`s pressure & constant punching would be hell for Pea, I think he grinds him down enough for a pts win. I could be wrong tho, close fight but Armstrong for me.
Whitaker never even fought in a fight that was scheduled for 15 rounds, much less actually gone the entire 15.
I've changed my mind since the last topic mostly due to what Sweet Pea has said and I can't deny this any further, no matter how big of a fan I am of Armstrong. I decided to watch a lot of tapes of each since then and really study this fascinating match-up. Pea is simply too good off the backfoot and Armstrong's footspeed is to slow to catch and land powerful punches. Pea UD.
