this is a potentially all time great fight! i rank ike as the second best H2H lightweight of all time and whitaker ain't far behind. I got to be honest, stylistically i see ike's superior athleticism and aggression keeping whitaker on his toes and off balance all night. pea doesn't have the firepower to really deter ike, though his body attack allow him to cut into ike's lead in the second half of the fight. I see williams winning a UD with a mid round knockdown thrown into the mix
When you see Williams fighting good outside men, he uses his jab to try and keep tabs on them, he fights at a high tempo if need be, and he keeps throwing plenty of leather to slow them down. But i just think the perfect style for him is someone who comes right to him, he's too deadly for someone like that. He's so skilled that i won't rule him out of this, but i like Pernell's skills so much that i favour him toreally use the jab well, and offset his man with the stuff he was famous for at 135. Great fight no doubt, this is the cream of the lightweight crop.
may not agree with the outcome but this is certainly one of the top 3 or so fights at lightweight ever:thumbsup
for me, ike is one of the only people that may have even better reflexes and speed at 135 than sweet pea but with superior firepower. though, if whitaker can get the jab working at you said, he'd keep ike off point.
Yeah, i do think Whittaker is more of a complete fighter in terms of his varying styles of effectiveness. And that boxing ability would be key in my opinion. Williams is so sharp with the combos/power flurries though, and the countering ability like you say. The chess match would actually be very interesting to watch unfold.
Thanks Suzie. It's actually been a while since i've watched Williams. Might watch him in some free time over the next few days.
:huhThat doesn't seem to describe Ike at all. He was more of a Lightweight Joe Louis than any kind of speed demon, and certainly no defensive maestro (if that's what you meant when you commented on his reflexes). He was actually quite hittable. Given Ike's series with the slickster Willie Joyce (where he went 1-3 I believe) and his troubles with boxer/movers in general (Tippy Larkin was also supposed to have schooled him prior to the KO), I don't think there's much worse a fighter for him to face than Whitaker. When didn't Whitaker get the jab working? That was the focal point of his offense, and I think it'd suit him very well against someone as content to jab in ring centre as Ike. Ike didn't apply the kind of pressure needed to beat someone like Whitaker, which was evident during most of his struggles with the cuties/fast movers.
