I wouldn't say Pernell was the weakest puncher around, but he certainly wasn't the type of puncher Forrest was.

Intuitively, I want to say that Mosely was too active with his punches, and Whitaker didn't have enough pop to keep him honest.

The problem with this goes straight to the matchup between Wright and Mosely. Very different defenses because Wright just doesn't give you a target to begin with. But, if Wright, who has a more simple defense without great punching power can just counter Mosely all night, I don't see why Pernell wouldn't be able to come up with an effective defense.

Pernell showed you targets with the intent of countering by making you miss, it seems it would be more difficult to defeat Mosely with this sort of defense due to his activity, but Mosely is also the type of fighter that makes big mistakes when he gets countered. He has an aggressive nature which is good most of the time, but Whitaker made his career on counter punching, pissing off his opponents and playing mind games, making his opponents pay for being hasty and aggressive. When you really think about the matchup, this should be a very probably conclusion.
