During Whitaker's lightweight reign, two featherweight champions challenged for his title without success....What if the immortal Willie Pep gave it a try?
    Who and why?

Pernell Whitaker had the size advantage over Willie Pep and was naturally the bigger man. From what I have seen, Whitaker was more versatile than Pep. I envision Whitaker using his jab to keep Pep at a distance and outboxing him from the outside.

    Whitaker decision

Whitaker because of being bigger. His blows would be heavier, and give him the rounds.

Thanks for the opinion brooklyn1550. I thought this might be an intriguing fight because of Pep's skills and overall standing as one of the best pure boxers ever...and that Whitaker really never attempted to impose his strength on anyone...bigger or smaller.

It is an intriguing match-up. It is just that in a battle of two of the best defensive fighters ever, the judges would have to score something. Whitaker is a bit heavier, and his blows would be a bit heavier as well.

The size would be the difference. 2 of the best defensive specialistists of all time. Pep had better footspeed and Whitaker's headmovement....well put it this way, he created moves. Very evenly matched. Neither guy hit overly hard, but threw great combinations. Both would have a hard time landing but I envision Whitakers harder blows and his jab to pick up enough points to win a nip and tuck affair.

The two best pure boxers ever IMO

Whitaker might be too strong for the legendary Pep/
    Pea UD

Pep is the greatest boxer of all time IMO, but pernell is just too big for him. his size and heavier blows would take its toll on pep much like the sammy angott fight.

Even if both were the same size, Whitaker would still have beaten Pep.

Seconded. That ain't any disrespect to Pep by the way, who was a great fighter. It would be a closer UD in favour of Pea.

A shrunken 120 pound Whitaker could beat Pep.

gotta disagree on that one. pernell was sweet, but pep was sweeter. if both were the same size pep would have beaten pernell who ran to much by outworking him, pep was the better combination puncher than pernell as well as equal defense.

Head-to-Head, Whitaker would win a decision, his size would just be too much I think.

P4P head-to-head, Pep wins a decision against Whitaker.
