Got to chat to one of the personal trainers in the club today. He was a really nice guy and sounds very similar too me. He plays rugby and goes for more athletic performance for himself, He made no bull**** about the personal trainer choice as a career, he said its competitive, long hours and the majority of clients just want to "tone up" and "loose weight". He has friends that do more strength and conditioning but dont get paid at all or very little for it! He did a sports science degree and then had to go back and do personal trainer course anyway as thats what alot of these fitness clubs want. Hes told me nothing i didn't already know. I can see the dilemma, i think hed love to do more and go down the athletes route. But like he said it realistically comes down to money. But its not put me off in the slightest just confirmed what i already know! Its going to be a hard slog. And im going to try my very best to be a cut above and once iv walked their walk for a while i will try and expand my knowledge and think outside their box so to speak and not get caught up and trapped in corporate get peoples money to loose weight and tone up! However i can see how easy this trap can be to fall into!!!
The hardest part is building a client base. Get a job as a fitness instructor ASAP, get to know the regulars and train there regularly, this way you can build a base without having to pay for gym use. Easy way to possibly pick up a few clients. Only problem with this is some get a bit too close and expect free information, they get a bit pissy when you start asking for money for help since you've helped them for free in the past...
Thanks for the advice virus, thats my plan. Id like to get Fitness Instructor asap however i just have to see. Im working in the Food And Beverage section which obviously isnt the same but i will try and keep in mind my main goal and hopefully meet and get along with some potential clients. The Company i work for are willing to fund the courses once iv done some time on the bar. As i haven't got the money for now it might just have to be their way . But im a persistent ******* so i will keep pestering them about it!! Hopefully get in the gym soon as a Fitness Instructor! Iv now got membership too so will be doing all my training in there aswell as just watching and learning Im working in quite a high end fitness center. These people have money coming from their arse. The PT i was talking too said it still amazes him how people will pay for personal training sessions, then refuse to do what you tell them. So i think it will be challenging in that way. His attitude is and i dont really blame him is its their money!
Hi again fellas, im looking to get some book recommendations , anything you think will help with fitness level 2 cert and then also some others for personal trainer , or anything you think is a good idea to read! Im going to just get names of useful books together and keep an eye out on ebay for 2nd hand ones. Try and start getting prepared asap cheers
In other words dont tell clients the truth. Make them think that some super complex program works better than the basics.
Or your providing a service and a guide in how to use the gym effectively. Just because they are the basics to you and you train doesnt mean everyone is the same. We should do away with all personal trainers and fitness professionals and let people just wander around the gym aimlessly with no advice on where to start or what to do. They'll figure it out themselves? Or all personal trainers in the world should go through the course gain the knowledge and give it out for free. What your failing to get is that not everyone are like the majority on this forum. I believe the same as you if your looking to "shape up and loose weight" its not rocket science. But for alot of people it is! And also they aren't motivated to do it on their own! I understand your cynicism as i agree with it to an extent but to say all personal trainers are rip off merchants and cheating the public is frankly ignorant.
Its the opposite of ignorance, I've basically lived in gyms for the better part of the last 2 decades. What I got from your conversation with your friend is that people don't want the basics. They want to believe that there is some magic and that the trainers who make the money sell them this lie. From my own experience I also find this to be true. I've seen trainers doing some of the most inane exercises because they are exotic. Your friend is right. There isn't much money in teaching people the right way. People don't want to hear that the simple compound lifts are the correct path. They want to believe that it is more complicated than it actually is. I could never be a trainer because I could never sell them that lie no matter how much they wanted to hear it.
Sadly this is true. As an example - there was a PT back at a gym I used to work at that used to do squats and silly **** on the BOSU ball (the usueless half ball platform thing). Because it looked so different his clients thought it was something special when really it was just a gimmick. Now go look at Joe Defranco and his athletes, they don't **** around with the silly lifts.
Windigo and Virus i understand what your saying i really do! But i dont quite know why you are grouping all personal trainers and trainers together. The health club i work for really is exactly like you say , they bring in the latest fad and try and sell it to people. And i understand guys like joe defranco can only train athletes that want to be train. But i still think what your failing to understand is yes people want it to be complicated and a quick fix. They dont want to accept its simple. HOWEVER you are not lying to them by giving them a routine that is different and seems a bit fancier but still works. Because the alternative is these people would probably do nothing! And you still didnt answer the fact that you are so against it that your alternative seems to be a world with out personal trainers at all and i dont see how this is a benefit to the general exercise public Thanks for your replies, and obviously ignorance is the wrong word windigo as you clearly arn't i just dont understand where your coming from.
I've seen some fat ladies doing some weird, pointless **** with fitballs in gyms, may aswell be doing nothing.. I think most personal trainers like to introduce gimmicky exercises to make the average joe think they're knowledgable. An intelligent personal trainer is a rare thing from my experience. The classic lifts derived from olympic lifting should be emphasised, technique should be emphasised. There's nothing wrong with an old lady doing bodyweight squats and lunges, the problem is that the old lady doesn't need a gym for that... It's all business
