    Pete has done very well for himself. He lives in nice five-bedroom detached house in a nice area of Brum, drives a nice car, his wife has a nice car and goes on foreign holidays two or three times a year.

    When he has gone through spells when he hasn’t been active – which didn’t happen very often during his long and productive career that saw him take few beatings – he used to help on the building sites, doing a bit of hod carrying.

    That kept the wolves from the door.

    People say he didn’t try but I thought he was really, really unlucky not to be given the nod against West Brom’s Wayne Downing in a four-rounder in Burton last March (2007). He lost by a point, 39-38, and looked a good winner to me.

    Boxing has made him some good money and it won’t be the last we’ve seen of him in the game as he is going to be helping down Nobby’s place in the years to come.

    I wish the Professor a happy retirement.
