Some thoughts on Jackson. It’s a shame there is no film on him, as he was described as smooth, fast and skilled. A big man in his time, Jackson was 6’1 1/2 with a 77 inch reach and trained down to a fighting weight of 195-200 pounds. Unlike Jack Johnson, Peter Jackson was well liked. We can draw a few conclusions of his style, strengths and weaknesses from the press.

Jackson was your classic boxer – puncher type with good foot speed and great hand speed. He is said to have possessed a 1-2 that landed in the blink of an eye. Jackson’s resume strong. He was the first man to KO Maher, Mcaulife, Dooley, and Slavin…all of these matches happened when the above fighter were in their prime or close to it. Jackson also stopped Lee, Denver Ed Smith, Cardif and Godfrey. The Slavin win is likely Jackson’s best.

Jackson did draw with very good Goddard and a great Corbett.

Jackson did show some weakness vs. Goddard as he lacked a top level chin and paid for it when facing an aggressive durable type who can punch as Goddard was. Jackson though older was in shape and in good form according to the NY Times, but crumbled quickly when matched with Jeffries, who was similar to Goodard, but stronger overall. Stamina or lack thereof was not an issue in this match, nor was Jackson’s form or timing has he had a good first round. One poster here might point out Jackson had TB at this point, yes, but it was not an advanced stage, and might not have bothered Jackson.

Jeffries says Jackson landed several stiff punches

You could say Jackson was a little suspect in taking punches from punchers. I picture him as a bigger version of Ezzard Charles and would have picked him to defeat Sullivan a few years before Corbett beat Sullivan in 1892

Chapter 40 - Talks of Sullivan and Jackson attending the same event in boston, and also of a spar with Gus Lambert who was a 230 lb heavy Jackson had to ko in 4 orounds

Chapter 41 - speaks among other things of John L Sullivan accepting the fight with Peter, after the Kilrain legal battles were sorted out, and also discusses Denver Ed Smith fight. Interestingly, there is also the mention of the tragic fight which caused California to back off on the fight game and which seems like it cost us all Jackson vs Sullivan. Interestingly it was Jackson who left california at this time. THis explains why i have always read that Jackson considered Corbett to have wronged him by ducking him and not so much sullivan.
