The report is likely a fabrication. It is out of Australia from a London correspondent about something that allegedly took place in the U.S. Find me a confirming report in the U.S. that this took place.

What do you suppose is the motive for such a fabrication?

The Australians loved Jackson and criticized Sullivan for drawing the color line. A report like that, saying that Jackson was beating him in a bout, would be the type of thing Australians would like to read. There were zero ethics in news reporting back then, which is why it is important to take a look at several local primary sources to truly get the real flavor about what happened, and even if something happened.

I also doubt it happened, and agree 100% that it is unlikely.

I am not sure that News ethics were that much different to now. And with any news story, they only tell half the story. Also, with the lack of contact across the world and technology. I found a story last night (cant remember the exact fighters involved) but it was something similar to a short wired report of Dempsey knocking out Wills. obviously it never happened.

But, this is nothing more than an exhibition in a theatre, not a real fight. I am not saying it happened but Sullivan sparred plenty of exhibitions. And i am sure dozens were with great fighters we didnt know about.

I'll take a wild, crazy, lunatic guess and say that it's about selling newspapers?

    Just came across this.

I hardly think that a story of only a sentence or two is going to sell newspapers is it?

If only someone around here had written a book on or two on Sullivan...

I am minded to think that the incident did not happen, simply because it would have created a bigger media footprint.

You always keep an open mind though.

    IN and of itself, no.

But if this is they type of newspaper that consistently took a risk on baseless rumours to get the scoop, of course. If editorial policy was to print such morsels without any real proof then it would dramatically enhance sales.
