I think the Henry Akinwande did Mcneeley some serious long term damage, not everybody can take punishment to the head like Chuvalo and appear fine when older.

The human body is complicated and strange to say the least, guy's like Duran who's in his 60's now fought nearly 40 years, and had over 100 pro fights, and fought the toughest men alive, show no signs of being punch drunk, brain damaged, or can't take care of themselves, same with Holmes, and George Foreman, soon to be members of boxing's old farts club, and of course Lamotta too..

Then there's guy's like Mcneeley, Meldrick Taylor, and Riddick Bowe who doesn't look right either, who look like they are having serious neurological disorders, and are only in their 40's and didn't fight nearly as long...

It's one of the dangers my dad was always worried about when I started as an amateur. It's hard on the fighters, but it comes with the territory I suppose.

Exactly and surely that's why some fighters may have much shorter primes than others, the damage inside the brain is hard to detect.

Why in the hell is Roy Jones Junior still allowed to fight when it's as clear as day he's suffering from brain damage?

Roy is a strange case. He's been brutally knocked out several times but he still talks clear and doesn't appear to have impaired thinking. You'd think a guy that's been put out as many times as he has would be drooling in a wheelchair.

He definitely should stop fighting immediately though.

He sounds bad.... Wow. shame. Abusing drugs for years certainly didn't help either though.

It's weird, to me he's got this absent look in his eyes though, it's hard to describe. I don't think he talks as clear as he used to tbh.

Because he took quite a bit of time off in-between losses, often the brutal concussive knockouts aren't as bad as a sustained beating. Roy has been KO'd badly what, 3 times? I suppose the Tarver KO and the Johnson ones were a bit close, but Roy didn't really take any damage before getting knocked out in the 2nd. He's lucky I suppose.

I saw an interview with Bert Cooper not too long ago and he didn't seem punch drunk at all. Like someone else said in this thread, not everybody is the same. Some can take tremendous amounts of punishment over long periods of time and remain sharp for the rest of their days, others are like Mcneely in their mid 40s.

Julio Cesar Chavez fought over 100 fights and certainly fought too long at too high a weight… and against dozens of top flight fighters. Doesn't seem punchy at all.

Same thing with Hopkins, he will be 50 in January, and been fighting almost 30 years and seems fine..
