It seems a bit odd to me that people who rated Quillin very highly before the Jacobs fight now rate him so low after being KOed in the first round by a hard hitter.

If he was comprehensively outboxed over many rounds and this showed up flaws that could be exposed by other current fighters, then yes, i could imagine why people would change there mind so drastically. This didnt happen, though. He got caught by a good shot early, didn't recover and was stopped. It happens in boxing.

 

its because many don't rate the guy who stopped him that high so instead of raising jacob they lower quillin

 

I don't rate anybody Quillin or Jacobs defeated too high. Quillin was exposed earlier by Rosado and Lee.

The same with Jacobs. Quillin is his ONLY decent win. He was exposed by Pirog, and even Truax fight showed that Jacobs is B (B+ at best) level.

 

Quillen athletic? He reminds me of a poor mans Trinidad the way he moves around on unsteadly legs when hurt.

 

You don't judge somebody's athleticism based on how graceful they are when they get wobbled, or else a lot of people are very wrong about the athleticism of, say, Roy Jones. :yep

 

Quillin has the power to hurt anyone, but his skills just a league or 2 below Canelo's, Cotto's, esp GGG's, and seems on par with the rest like Lee. I still need to see more of Jacobs since his opposition has been limited, but his destruction of Quillin was quality stuff an elite would do. Jacobs shows great combination punching, and that is sign of greatness. Putting punches together and beating your opponent to the punch with minimal power is just as deadly as having one punch ko power. GGG may have that lethal ko power, but Jacobs tko power should make everyone very wary. Jacobs can do a Phillips-Tszyu on GGG if GGG is not careful.

 

Tszyu just gassed out against Phillips who looked like he was roided to the extreme. Jackobs didn't apply pressure even against mediocre Truax. Besides, Phillips was able to take Kostya's best shots while Jacobs will probably not survive Gennady's jabs.

One punch can change everything. Of course Pete is still a top fighter. Things can happen in a split second in this sport that end the night. I believe Pete will be back and get back to winning. He just got caught by a fighter on his level and couldn't recover.

 

Even if Jacobs was awful, getting KO'd in one round, whilst embarrassing, doesn't necessarily mean that the fighter KO'd is bad.

 

It doesn't have to be either. Why do many people on this board see everything in black or white?

This thread also highlights another problem on thia board. Namely, rating everyone solely against the elite. For me, Quillin would get beat by GGG, but he would be competitive against the rest. Why is it that when someone isn't the top dog in a division they are rated badly?

The fact is, Quillin is one of the best MWs in the world. Is he the best? No. Will he get beat again? Almost likely. Does this necessarily make him a bad fighter? No.

Well said ! Limerick highlights the overriding point that Boxing simpletons can not appreciate. A single defeat should not define a career. It is an area inwhich the UFC is miles ahead.

 

Peter Quillen is the biggest hype job. End of the story.
