Don't know how you all feel about last night, but I felt like it was more that Peter was bad than Klitschko was good. It just seemed like Peter made it easy for Klitschko. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I'm not trying to take away from Vitali's historic victory, but I just thought it was so bizzarre how bad Peter looked. It's almost as if he wasn't trying. He was just taking Vitali's jabs through every round, blocking here and there, but mostly just getting his @ss beat. After a while, Vitali just kept his arms to his sides, and I thought that was stupid, then again, Peter wasn't really giving Vitali reason to cover up. Unbelievable. Thoughts?
As I had been saying all along there was just too much of a height and skill difference between the two fighters. If Peter is going to keep fighting on he needs to seriously consider getting a new trainer and team.
When you figure it out let the rest of us know. Nobody has a clue what happened last night. All I can tell you is the guy did not show up to win. Although Chef is probably right that the Wladimir fight took alot out of him. Psychologically he is probably a cooked goose.
Disagree. I think this is simply a case of Klitschko being head and shoulders above Peter, and not just in size, either. Peter did what he usually does, it was just utterly ineffective against Vitali. No matter how much folks try to downgrade Peter - many of them former Peter "supporters," btw - they can't take away from Vitali's impressive achievement last night. I've been following boxing for a long time, and 99 times out of 100, an older fighter coming off a long layoff - who faces a younger fighter who may not be as good as his prime self - gets beat, and usually beat pretty badly. Happened to Joe Louis, happened to Sugar Ray Robinson, Ali and many others. This is a significant achievement, regardless of how much better a fighter Vitali than Peter.
His punch resistance hasnt been the same since the Wlad fight, and we all are neglecting something Vitali hits REALLY ****ing hard. He was planting that jab right in Peters face and every time Peter tried to close the distance he got rocked with the left hook right hand. Peter got outclassed, plain and simple. He didnt expect Vitali to hit that hard or to be that good. Vitali was the superior fighter and beat him down. Peter got stunned in the first round with the first right hand Vitali threw. Peter did what he has always done. A major difference between Vitali and Wlad, when Peter tried to wing his punches and threw those massive hooks, Vitali just leaned back and countered Peter, whereas Wlad would have clinched and put his weight on Peter. Vitalis strategy worked better, as Peter was completely discouraged from trying to bullrush due to the fact that Vitali just kept countering him with the right hand every time he tried.
Peter was a joke yesterday, he didn't even get himself in shape, I knew it wouldn't matter that vitaly would tire early because Peter was breathing hard after rd 1 what a disgrace.
I've seen a lot of people saying that Sam Peter was trying to outbox Vitali and that he should have tried to engage him on the inside. I saw a boxer trying to get on the inside, but getting hit with bombs in the way in. He simply couldn't get close. Vitali was keeping him away with his great jab and range. A great performance.
Against a 37 year old man who was coming from a 4 year layoff, him being a 28 year old champion,it WAS POOR
After the Wlad fight the arrogant Peter stated he ran, all Wlad did was easily outmanuever Peter the WHOLE fight, you would think he would drop some lbs, come in lighter and faster and work on his footwork but he is so full of himself he couldn't do it. Instead he has been getting bigger and fatter which is why he no longer KOs anyone. If Peter doesn't change he is done.
No. peter fought the way he did against maskaev. the difference is that he was facing a 10 times better fighter. I KNEW vit would win if he made it through camp.
Vitali fought a very intelligent fight without even taking many chances. He kept turning in circles while keeping Peter at arm's length which forced Sam to keep resetting his feet in order to punch Klitschko effectively. Peter has slow hands and even slower feet and this tactic ruined his momentum and timing. Everytime he tried to rush in he ate a heavy jab to his face sometimes followed by a long overhand right. The layoff probably did have an effect on Vitali as his timing was off and he hesitated a bit too much when throwing the right. Maybe he wanted to play it safe but it looked like many times he wanted to throw the right but would stop himself whereas before he used to let it rip. To Peter's credit, he did show a lot more head movement than usual which may have contributed to throwing off Vitali's timing somewhat. I think the sad part is that even if Peter caught Vitali with some wild homerun punch nothing would have happened. Peter's fate was sealed the moment he agreed to defend his belt against Vitali. He looked mentally defeated at the press conference. Another round or two and he would have been totally defenseless and knocked out badly.
Yep, and what is discounted is the fact that Peter was simply discouraged. Against young Klitschko he always knew he was one shot from victory. Against Vitali he was unable to mount a sustained offensive because it was discouraging to never be gaining ground. Vitali had him figured out, and Peter knew that Vitali has a chin. Peter is as weak mentally as you can get at the top of the boxing game.
Should have went after klit from round 1, hell for leather, klit was too big and peter simply got outclassed. It was sad that he had to retire himself though.
