This has been a problem in sportscasting since the Howard Costello era. Instead of good but self-effacing play by play guys like Dick Enburg and Don Dunphy, the network bosses give us irritating microphone hogs like Cosell, Pacheco, Atlas and Steven A Clown. Ratings usually wins over quality. I guess boxing attracts these types too.
I agree he doesn't have the knowledge to be an in-ring commentator, and what he often ignorantly expressed affected the quality of the observations from the broadcast team as a whole. But we should appreciate how much he as a general sports commentator enjoys boxing. We as boxing guys assume 'mainstream fans' we only be interested in brawls or hype, but that's an insult to a lot of intelligent, curious people out there who will be wowed by elite speed, skill, and tactics. There are a lot of occasional boxing fans who expect it to be only fighting, but I think there are a almost as many potential fans who we're alienating if we don't convey in an understandable, personable way that there is more to boxing. Stephen A's enthusiasm for Mayweather on ESPN is exactly the kind of positive representation of boxing we need to gain interest and new fans. There have to be a lot of general sports fans who have been wowed by Floyd who would tune in a few more hours a year to be wowed by Loma, Crawford, and others. We need more not less talk like Stephen A Smith in general sports media.
they can try n fix him but idk man he was like that casual you have over for ppv event and there over here dragging on sum side conversation, the whole thing which wat punch hurt him or not was dragged like next rd was bout to start n stephen a smith is tryin to debate the whole time with timmy , this isnt ur show on espn wit skip you dont gotta go agaisnt ur co worker at will , yes you can have ur disagreements but stephen a is a casual, he knows a thing or 2 but stick that main stream sports wit that he even talks way to much for way to long i kno its his job to yap but man hes annoying. he used to be ok back in the day but not anymore.
It's not their knowledge or lack of knowledge that is in question for me but rather the way they present themselves and the way they treat the knowledge of boxing that's at their disposal. I don't care for their post fight interviews. There is no individuality in their questions or comments. It's always the same BS. Max is the overhype king and premier agitator. Stephen A is a rattle trap and a loud mouth know it all.
Truly awful commentary, the best in the business only talk if there's something worthwhile to say,his constant droning made me want to switch off.
I've always hated this know nothing fool on his own show. He is a boxing imbecile and shouldn't go anywhere near a mic. Stick to football and basketball you phony superficial blabbermouth. Give us Steve Kim!
Bradley was every bit as poor, the pair of them make Buncey sound like a professor of boxing and that's extremely difficult to do with someone who is as much of a ****witt as he is!!
