    Professional Boxing promoters are failing to consider the future of the sports fan base by signing exclusive TV deals with Subscription channels. The petition is to make sure boxing remains a popular sport for generations by making sure any British fighter performing at a highest level is seen buy the biggest audience possible.

    In the broadcasting act of 1996 many sporting event were put into two categories. Category A features events such as The FIFA World Cup Finals, The Olympics, Rugby World Cup and Wimbledon Tennis Final, and guarantees that they will receive a live terrestrial television broadcast.
    Category B features events such as Test Cricket matches, The Ryder Cup and Six Nations rugby. It guarantees that Secondary Coverage (Highlights, Delayed coverage) is protected and must be shown by a terrestrial broadcaster.

    This petition is to make any world title fight (sanctioned by the WBA, WBC, WBO, and IBF) involving a British boxer become a category B Protected event. This would ensure the lasting popularity of one of country’s oldest past times, and allow all of Britain the ability to view world class boxing involving a British fighter.

    this is the full list of sports on the act;

    Once i get a decent amount of signitures I will send it it the UK sports minister.

    As I said on the general forum, all this would do would mandate Setanta or Sky to make delayed coverage or highlights of some of their fights to terrestrial broadcasters. Where is any evidence at all that BBC or ITV would be in anyway interested in taking up that option (or, indeed, that they couldn't already do so if they were interested)?

    This is a complete non-starter. Gavin Rees v Solomon M'Baye, Nicky Cook v Roman Karmazin or Enzo Maccarinelli v Bobby Gunn are not events on the same level as the Ryder Cup or the Six Nations. Nor is it obvious why we should be embracing an idea that would protect those three fights, but not Hatton v Pacquiao or Calzaghe v Hopkins. Is Maccarinelli v Gunn really a bigger event than Ricky Hatton's challenge for the P4P number one belt? :)

    It's pointless for the specific reasons I pointed out and which you have absolutely no answers for.

    BBC showed delayed coverage of Kessler vs Calzaghe as Warren gave the rights to the BBC for free to boost Calzaghes profile leading up to the Sports Personality.

    Hatton and Haye fights were sold for decent sums. If the fights were put on the protected list Sky, Setanta or the promoter would be forced to strike a deal with the highest bidder. So if nobody bids and channel 4 offer £1, its shown on channel 4 for £1.

    Ok, so the boxers are being paid less, because obviously £1 plus the non-exclusive live rights is going to be less than the total that an attractive fight could gain in exclusive live rights. That will have a knock on effect on the ability of promoters to stage big fights in the UK so reduce the quality of live boxing available for people tp actually go to watch.

    But there is still precious little evidence that the BBC, ITV, Channel Four or Channel Five actually have any interest in showing highlight of fights like Cook v Karmazin, even if they are basically getting them for free. I guess it might get whacked on Channel Five in the 2am slot.

    But then that kind of undermines the argument you are trying to make that Nicky Cook v Roman Karmazin is an event with a special national resonance, containing an element which serves to unite the nation, a shared point on the national calendar, not solely of interest to those who follow the sport in question. Doesn't it?
