    Professional Boxing promoters are failing to consider the future of the sports fan base by signing exclusive TV deals with Subscription channels. The petition is to make sure boxing remains a popular sport for generations by making sure any British fighter performing at a highest level is seen buy the biggest audience possible.

    In the broadcasting act of 1996 many sporting event were put into two categories. Category A features events such as The FIFA World Cup Finals, The Olympics, Rugby World Cup and Wimbledon Tennis Final, and guarantees that they will receive a live terrestrial television broadcast.
    Category B features events such as Test Cricket matches, The Ryder Cup and Six Nations rugby. It guarantees that Secondary Coverage (Highlights, Delayed coverage) is protected and must be shown by a terrestrial broadcaster.

    This petition is to make any world title fight (sanctioned by the WBA, WBC, WBO, and IBF) involving a British boxer become a category B Protected event. This would ensure the lasting popularity of one of country’s oldest past times, and allow all of Britain the ability to view world class boxing involving a British fighter.

    this is the full list of sports on the act;

    Once i get a decent amount of signitures I will send it it the UK sports minister.

    No chance. There's simply no argument that a WBO title fight between Nicky Cook and Roman Martinez should be protected to the extent of the other events on that list.

    Also the disorganised nature of boxing would mean that we would be protecting Cook v Martinez for highlights to be shown on a terrestrial channel, but not Hopkins v Calzaghe or Hatton v Pacquiao. What was that about protecting 'world class' boxing?

    Lastly, I'm not sure there is a great deal or evidence that satellite broadcasters are not already willing to sell on highlights packages of these events. Calzaghe v Kessler, for example, was rerun on BBC after being shown live on Setanta. In most cases there would simply be no interest on behalf of ITV or BBC.

    BS. Sky have done wonders for boxing in britain. Why should tit have to be on terrestrial tv? Shouldnt a fighter get the best deal possible for them?

    If an event is category B protected it could still be broadcast live on Sky or Setanta, but they would have to offer delayed coverage or highlights to terrestrial broadcasters.

    As I said above there is very little evidence that the BBC or ITV would have any interest in taking these up or that they couldn't do so already if they wanted.

    I would rather watch a fight on Sky than ITV... ITV Sport's coverage is utter shite. Sky and Setanta are good for boxing.

    So we have to pay £15 a couple of times a year, if you dont wanna pay just watch it on the internet.

    Sky and Setanta have done a lot for boxing in the UK, and the British public should appreciate that rather than signing idiot, nonsensical petitions.
