Basically what I mean is how many weight classes did they compete in where you'd class them as one of the best H2H. Obviously Ali would demolish any BW, so that's not what I mean. I mean someone like Ezzard Charles who is probably number 1 at LHW and can mix it up at MW and HW. Or someone like Sugar Ray Robinson who is undoubtedly number 1 at WW and top 5, 10 at least at MW. So who?
For me it's quite probably Henry Armstrong, for me he's number 1 at FW, top 5 at LW, and top 10 at WW. He'd also dominate at SFW and be top 5 at 140 imo. Then Ezzard Charles and Sugar Ray Robinson. Also Harry Greb deserves a mention. He's my number 1 at MW and probably top 5 at LHW. Some Honourable Mentions Tommy Hearns beast at WW, MW number 1 at JMW. Roy Jones Jr, beast at MW, LHW, CW and number 1 at SMW. James Toney, beast at MW, CW, SMW can mix it up at HW. Roberto Duran, top 3 at LW and a beast at WW, JMW and can mix it up at MW. Tony Canzoneri, Beast from BW to WW. Fighting Harada, Beast at Fly and BW.
Cheers. I agree. He's a beast, I've reconsidered where I have him placed pfp. Especially if I when comparing him H2H to the rest of my top 10. The only problem with your post is that now I'm worried that I might have killed my own thread.
Armstrong would have to be at the top of the list for that criteria, personal pick is RJJ, for moving all the way up and being so dominant doing so.
If I'm talking weight-wise I have to say *sigh* Rocky Marciano. I just can't really envision anyone around his weight really beating him.
Does he dominate multiple weights? I kind of included the Rule to eliminate HWs, especially ones who only fought at HW. So whilst I agree that Rocky in his prime would basically beat everyone (bar Usyk& Holyfield) below 200lbs, I think plenty of guys who fought at lots of different weights are higher. @McGrain mentioned Langford, and I'm kicking myself for forgetting about him. That's the type of fighter I was looking for tbh. Any insight on some lesser known lower weight guys?
Roman Gonzalez is an amazing H2H fighter, even more so than resume wise. From 105 to 112, he was basically a tank with elite skills, and elite power at 105 - 108. Very hard to pick winners over him. Even at 115 he has the skills to beat some top opponents.
Bumped my thread if that helps. Griffo basically embarrassed Gans on the defense whilst pudgy and hungover. Him and Roy are Boxing's greatest talents IMO.
Cool, I'm reading through the thread now. Jones is an excellent shout for most talented fighter ever. Anything about Wolgast? He did seem to be decent at BW and brilliant at Fly. I think Wilde probably deserves a mention, as does Fitzsimmons.
Of course! Wolgast was excellent and remarkably consistent. In footage, he looks amazing, and neither is really peak either. Great, unique skills. Same with Wilde, who seems to have an uncanny, amazing judge of distance on film. And of course power. I'd also mention Zarate as a H2H beast at 118. Same with Olivares.
