In all probability, Liston was probably somewhere between 35 and 45. The lack of records, plus the human rights situation in the US at the time, greatly inhibits any attempt to find an exact date.

In Sandslough, Arkansas, the Census (public archive up to the 30's) shows no mention of a Charles Liston. His immediate older brother Curtis was shown to be born in 1929 by aforementioned database however, so it's unlikely he was older than 34 when he faced Clay - most sources have him listed as born in 1932 which seems most likely at this point. The 1940 Census is not public yet. Thanks to Old Fogey for this information.

It seems to all get a bit like those barbershop skits in Coming To America..."Joe Louis was 112 years old!"

So its official, Liston ducked Marciano, Charles and Walcott by purposely not becoming a pro until Rocky retired and the era was weaker when he was 34-36. Master stroke by Liston :D

Hells, I think Liston avoided Max Schmeling and Tom Sharkey too... ;)

Wasn't he one of 26 children? How do you census that with exactitude?

Ah, some never tire of fanning the flames of the Liston myth.

I read an article about this recently in "Boxing News" 25 July 2008 which backs this up, possibly same source. the 1940 census will be in 2015 so we'll just have to wait till then to find out.
Another interesting thing that came up was in the 1920 census where Archibald Lee Wright was recorded at 3 years and 2 months meaning a birth date of around November 1916. Moore's age was a topic of discussion for years with 1913 being given as his DOB.
