Physical strength is one of the most underrated attributes in boxing

When people who analyze boxing assess the strengths of fighters, it seems there is one aspect they very often miss: raw physical strength. People will readily talk about speed, punching power, ring generalship, etc, but the ability to out muscle an opponent is not often mentioned. This makes sense as it's something that is felt more readily than it is seen.

When an opponent is physically stronger and knows how to implement this advantage into their game, it is tactically and emotionally disastrous for a boxer. The tactics are subtle but clear. The stronger fighter controls the head more easily, controls the body inside, dictates the clinch, dictates the pace inside, chooses when and how exchanges will occur on the inside. The emotional toll is similar to what a pressure fighter produces on their opponent.

The most obvious and recent example of this is Beterbiev-Gvozdyk. Artur has freakish strength as we know, but he also has a background in wrestling. He knows how to control the body and head of his opponent in a masterful way, certainly levels above most boxers. He's one of the few boxers making full use of his natural strength advantage.

There are plenty of other instances of physical strength playing the biggest role in a fight: Fury-Wilder, Kovalev-Ward 2 (yes, Kovalev won the first, but Ward muscling him in the clinch extinguished whatever he had left in the 2nd). I think it would behoove many top boxers to work on building strength without building muscle (the opposite of AJ, if you will). I also believe boxers should practice wrestling or sambo as often as they can.

I was watching an old fight and I remember the commentator giving props to the fighter who was controlling the fight by pretty much wrestling. Hold and twisting the hand of the opponent. I want to say it was a Greb fight, but not 100%.

    Tyson fury is an animal

How can all these other men even compete?

The only thing they have on him is p4p more power but that's not enough

Wilder actually managed to spin fury in a clinch to the ropes but fury immediately returned the favour spun him into a headlock and literally crushed him in the corner like a ragdoll. Wilder is no weakling either.

I think others are going to start fighting rough too. AJ is physically stronger than Fury and may beat him at his own game.

AJ isn't physically stronger and when he is gasping for air Fury will walk through him.

Yes, I always take into account an apparent display of natural strength. That’s why I’ve stated how you can’t tie up guys like Spence, Beterbiev, and a couple others, they’re too strong, they’ll push you off and punish you.

This is something that many people just dont understand. A perfect example of this is Loma vs Manny. People here think just because theyre the same height and could actually meet at a catchweight that it'd be an even fight but that absolutely ridiculous. Manny is far stronger than Loma and would walk through his punches and knock him out. I have two nephews that are about the same age but one is is a bit taller than the other. They weigh about the same but the difference in strength is easy to see between the two. One can barely bench press 100lbs yet the other can nearly twice that. Strength his immensely underrated.

You are confusing DURABILITY w/ PHYSICAL STRENGTH. Pacquiao is more durable than Lomachenko, but I doubt he's physically stronger. Pacquiao is easily manhandled and out-muscled. When he's being clinched, he usually just waits until the ref stops the action. Also see how he bounces off his opponents and is often reeling against the ropes from blocking punches. This often makes him look like he's taking punishment.

Pacquiao would be smaller on fight night than Linares, Campbell, Mikey, Crolla, and Teofimo!

Good post. I feel there's a lot of confusion between physical strength and punching power when they're two separate things. Guys who are physically strong aren't always murderous punchers. Mayweather is a perfect example.

Floyd Mayweather, too. The guy is RIDICULOUSLY physically strong and can't be bullied physically. He tossed Mosley around like a rag doll and Mosley is one of the bigger welterweights.

Broner is very physically strong as well.

I don’t think so, not relative to Spence. I think Spence manhandles him on the inside and gets him out of there in 8 rds.
