Its huge advantage to be the most skilled man in the division. But likewise it's also a huge advantage to be the most physical. Physical strength, toughness and power matter a lot. When you're the hardest and baddest dude in the division you have an advantage over any opponent you step in the ring with. We see this with Beterbiev and Lopez. Maybe not the most technical fighters. But the hardest men in the division. And it causes serious problems for the opponent. Skill can only take you so far.
Joe Smith is as at least as ‘physical’ as Beterbiev, and he was pretty much taken to school by a smaller, weaker and lighter hitting technician in Bivol. Size and strength mean nothing without the skill to back it up, look at guys like Jarrett Hurd. Lopez is a very technical fighter by the way.
There's no one quality that supersedes all the others. Size, strength and skill (plus other things) all are important.
Smith had Bivol out on his feet with a grazing blow and Bivol was saved by the bell. And yes Smith is tough as nails and punches hard, but Beterbiev is physically stronger.
Bodybuilders around the world would be turning pro and winning titles if strength was so important. Skill is infinitely more important in the boxing ring.
It is definitely at times underrated, but there are so many fighters over the years that overcome that, even within the same weight class. You get a mix and match of different attributes, from speed, height, weight, power, agility, reaction times, etc. So it's hard to ever say when one attribute is going to cancel out the others.
yes, he doesnt understand the difference between gym strong and genetically strong. which makes sense, people that are neither always want to believe that skills are the magic potion, because that means that they too, if they were inclined, could practice enough to beat their bullies.
We all knew the physicality of Lopez going in. Despite that everyone, including me, thought that Loma would be too much for him eventually. That's because we didn't know the skill Lopez also would bring to the table.
Skills are absolutely the magic potion, anyone that understands the first thing about boxing will tell you that. It’s not a strongman contest.
Yeah, it really depends on who's fighting whether this matters of not on these places. Obviously, Loma has looked small against Linares, Campbell, Crolla and now Lopez, he's been tempting fate. Signs were there against Linares he was pushing it. You have to be better than bigger guys just to break even, you have to be vastly superior to win convincingly. When the skill gap closes enough, you will lose, even if you still have more skill. And looks like Loma finally hit the wall with this guy. I think they were possibly too arrogant, however, thinking the skill would always be enough even with such a difference in natural size and power. But make no mistake, if Mayweather had been beaten by GGG at 154lb, size would very much matter around here.
