Physically speaking, Roberto Duran looked GREAT at 157 in 1996....

If you watch Duran-Camacho I closely, you'll something that is at once amazing ...and bizarre.

When a man hits his 40s, his athletic powers are taking a dive. By his mid 40s, even balance is going or gone. Don't believe me? Go down to your local YMCA and watch those 40-somethings on the basketball court. You know the ones -sweat bands, balding, flush-faced, a little paunchy, mouths open, eyes wide and determined to make their broken down bodies keep up with their pride. Watch them now, watch them! ....They aren't pivoting, they're slipping. They aren't herking and jerking, they're tilting until their other legs swings in front to prevent a crash.

Now watch Duran in that fight. When he misses a shot or his torso is moving faster than his leg (an epidemic at middle-age), he starts to tilt, and then uses the momentum of his tilt to hook Camacho. AND IT WORKS!! All night! Duran takes his geriatric problems and makes them work for him.

That's a damn genius your seeing.

Pretty soon, he'll be using his false teeth as brass knuckles.

Duran was off key and awkward in the early rds against Camacho, but that is to be expected since Camacho is a southpaw with above hand and foot speed..... But Duran was physically very well trained for a guy aged 45 in 1996........ Too bad Duran couldn't maintain that type of conditioning....

By 1997, against Jorge Castro, Roberto Duran was back to being above 160 pounds and looking slightly bloated and thick in the girth section of his body.... Outta the two fights they fought in 1997, each guy won a hometown decision....... Castro got the nod in Argentina, while Duran won the rematch in Panama.. Duran performed respectably in 1997 at age 45 / 46 years of age, but he wasn't as polished as he was for Camacho in '96....

    Note:

Come 1998 against William Joppy for the title on Showtime, Duran weighed 159 pounds but his body still lacked the earlier tone of the '96 fight with Camacho...........
