No shot, testosterone was still just barely discovered. It was being sold as a miracle cure by a crackpot in germany. Grimek may have been doing SOMETHING crazy, but it wasnt anabolic steroids. People have been looking for performance enhancers since the beginning of violence

Eh, for what it's worth, we have some anecdotes from West Coasters experimenting with test in late-mid 40's which are consistent with De Kruif's "The Male Hormone", although, yeah, i have to concede that it probably did not spread into other strength-intensive sports until late 50's-early 60's. In any event, steroids were completely legal and not stigmatized until 80's, so your point of course stands.

Happened as early as after the Roman Olympics… a journeyman by the name of Bob Hazelton started using after losing to Foreman 1969… If a journeyman with no backers or doctors in his camp can figure it out I don’t doubt Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Norton and Holmes could’ve taken something… do I think so? Who cares lol.

The first time Grimek touched steroids was after Dr Ziegler (spelling?) of the American weightlifting team went over to Russia… he discovered and brought back Test gave it to a few retired lifters (among them Grimek) they became stronger / more muscular then before but because cycling wasn’t fully understood they all started to face harsh side effects until they opted for D-bol instead, they still lost that year at the Olympics btw lol…. Little bit of interesting history, phase based training / cycles (common today) were created (allegedly) to work complimentary to steroids for when you hop off and on compounds at different intervals of training, I don’t believe it but it’s an interesting thought.
