physiologically I believe that the transition from past prime still good to "Shot" is not physically but Mentally, physiologically speaking... meaning your reflexes just fade away even if the boxers see the punch coming and they have avoided the same punch countless of time that becomes second nature, yet the get hit.. Chavez Sr. said the first thing that was gone was his reflexes.. must be hard looking at your 40 year old body looking in the best shape of your life because you have trained hard, you have your strength, yet when you get in the ring you get hit by shots you were avoiding in the past. I believe it was very hard for boxers like ODLH realising it was over..
Both of these guys abused their bodies...Look at Hopkins! But I believe that the will is their mentally but the body just wont respond as it used to
There is no clear transition. A "shot" fighter is usually a term for boxers, whose skills have declined to the point where they are neither recognizable by their fighting style nor competitive at decent level. It's also the one of the most overused words in boxing dictionary. "Shot" label is usually applied to every older boxer that shows signs of decline.
oh thats right. Alcohol and drugs will hurt your brain more than punches.. so if you abuse drugs you become shot sooner even if your body looks better than a 20 year old athlete
Or can't pull the trigger when they see openings. Hit and not get hit. They can't do both like they used too.
much of it is mental. When a fighter puts his all out in fights and goes to certain heights, it is very hard to reach those anymore. Sort of why when we get older life is not as exciting. We have done it already and nothing is the same as when it was all knew. I could be wrong. This might be the worst post in the history of ESB come to think of it.
