Pick a featherweight/junior lightweight to beat a 36 y/o DLH at welterweight.

Manny Pacquiaou.

I don't know if I'm willing to bet this fighter as the winner of the upcoming fight, but I will give Manny a chance. Oscar got hit a lot in his last bout. Pacquiao will have faster hands, and may have a little bit of pop at this weight. Notice that I said, "may have."

I really think that Oscar should have made this one of his last two fights, but I am interested in seeing the outcome. I have ordered all of Oscar's past fights on PPV. This one I may watch on Sopcast, and check out HBO's replay.

 

At welterweight? How about Jimmy McLarnin and Tony Canzoneri, both by KO.

 

Jimmy Mcclarnin? the dude who fought with his hands by his waist and chin sticking out? you actually think thats going to work vs a fundamentally modernized sound boxer with a great jab like oscar?

 

Barney Ross had an even better jab than Oscar and McLarnin still found a way to beat him. I don't think Oscar was any better or more modernised than Barney Ross.

McLarnin held his hands at his waist but it was more as a way of lulling the other fighter into thinking they could hit him than it was a fundamental flaw. McLarnin knew his chin was otherworldly, and so he'd gladly take a shot or two to land one of his own. Tony Canzoneri was similar as well.

 

To beat a much bigger fighter, you need in this order to win out.....skill (offensively and defensively top notch) speed, and quickness

I could only think of one that would have a real opportunity to go straight from 130 to 147 and accomplish this feat......

....this fighter has already beat DLH, and did it at 154 lbs.....

.....none other than Floyd Mayweather Jr.


Pac really does'nt have the style to beat DLH.....and his speed imo is overrated bigtime....nowhere near Mayweather Jrs. speed and quickness.

 

How about your boy Chavez if the fight occurs at 147?

I'd take the Chavez that fought Whitaker to beat a 36 year old DLH down no probs.

The 130 lbs Chavez did'nt have ungodly speed and quickness, but he did he did have great skill, and very underrated defense to go along with a grade A chin that would be required in facing a fighter 3 weight classes above.

The Chavez that fought Whitaker would beat the current version of DLH, but I"m thinking more the lines of a fighter jumping straight out of 130 lbs, as Pac is currently doing.

How do you see the DLH-Pac fight playing out Scientist?
I just dont see Pac having sufficient skill or the defense to avoid DLH's best shots.......

It could be argued that a prime Chavez would be able to get inside of DLH's reach and have the defense to avoid his big shots to be able to take the 36 year old fighter with stamina issues to the late rounds.
....but I just dont see where Pac has the skill or defense to be able to deal with a skilled big man like DLH, who is far from being slow himself.


.....however, because of styles, I like Mayweather's chances much better than Chavez'.
The combination of ungodly speed, quickness and defense is just a nighmarish styles matchup vs an aging fighter.

 

As one dimensional as Pac is, if he had a better chin, I think he would have been in with a real shot to outhustle DLH. But Pac gets hurt too easily for mine and DLH, slowing down and led footed as he is nowdays, will probably still hit Pac too much for him to cope.

If JMM is hurting Pac, DLH will probably knock him out.

If he fights defensively, I don't see Pac winning. As you say, he hasn't got the skill or defense to do it.

I'd like to see Pac do it, but I basically give him no chance unless he lands a Bernard Hopkins-esque body shot out of nowhere which is right on the money and winds DLH. Those shots are failry rare though.

 

Mayweather has the skill and defense to win, no doubt about it, but his workrate is fairly poor as a welterweight. If he took more chances than he is wont to normally do nowadays he would clearly distinguish himself from DLH.

 

Mayweather's workrate is'nt great, but when he is punching, he's extremely effective.....
....a high workrate the way Mayweather fights would'nt be required vs the current version of DLH.
