Marciano - intelligence

 

Monzons fundamental boxing ability is often over looked, being passed off as part of his Ring IQ or toughness.

 

Langford's h2h ability. Out of his 300 fight career only 5 men would defeat him and go unavenged, 3 of these whilst he suffered a detached retina in his mid thirties. Another of these men outweighed him by 30 pounds.

And of these 5 men he was always able to defeat someone who would go on to defeat them.

 

Hagler - Ring intelligence, I mean he made one mistake with the Leonard fight. If you look into it he was trying to be tactical as he thought Leonard would be preparing to fight Southpaws, the only thing Marvelous Marvin didn't know is Leonard was having troubles with his Southy Sparring Partners.

Frazier - Chin, Yes he got blown away by Big George but, people tend to forget he's arguably the hardest puncher of all time? Anyway besides that it was more of a styles job than a bad chin. Seeing Frazier was bobbing right into Georges looping fists.

Hearns - Chin, He only got stopped what 4 times in his career? Once against Ray Leonard after gassing, against Brakley past his prime and out of his weight class, against Uriah Grant after a leg inhury and finally in the infamous WAR which little men would have been able to survive.

Greb - Everything. People see some training footage and think He's not very good. Well we have footage of the likes of: Tunney, Loughran, Walker and we can tell these were excellent fighters who all had different styles and Greb managed to beat all of them. He must have been some fighter.

 

Jack Dempsey could box.

Marciano was cagey.

Primo Carnera was actually good.

Henry Armstrong had great punching power.

 

Floyd Patterson: chin. I explained that very often, no need to do it again.

Tony Canzoneri: power, his KO% is no real indication of his power.

Wlad Klitschko: chin and mental strength.

Just a cursory examination of his record..117-4-14..just 4 losses, and he wasn't ever truly ko'ed..Cervantes won on cuts..has to be one of the greatest records ever..close to Monzon's record BTW..Locche HAD to be tough as hell as well as being a boxing wizard..what an impressive record!

 

I agree with you on all three, for Wlad to come back as he did after the Sanders disaster and the other stoppages and the gassing out/stamina issues that he had for a spell..and to redeem himself like he did..he probably only wishes he had been able to fight Sanders again..otherwise, he has done as all great champions have done in redeeming himself.

 

Roy Jones was a very smart fighter, you dont get by as long as he did by fighting with your hands down, throwing power punches without having created your openings with the jab, unless you have an intuitive sense for what your doing in that ring.

Something that gets overlooked with Roy, is his footwork, its easy to talk about his handspeed, but that's irrelevant if you cant get your feet into the right positions to let your hands go, and because Roy didn't set his punches up, its even more impressive that he was able to get his feet into those positions, to land, and not get hit back.

Roy had the best footwork since SRL imo.
