    Nah. Not really.

There are occasional flare ups of racial tension. 95% of the planet is worse.

he's very tough. with the amount of punishment he takes it's quite worrying. i remember at one point he was quite hyped and some were saying he was going to achieve big things, and then i watch him box, and he squeaks out a win while taking lot of punishment, and i'm there just thinking " is this the guy they're on about?".

having a black president speaks volumes for their country. of course it exist, it exists in every country, but i'm just saying i've heard you got it bad out there. apparantly on your top programs, you hardly ever have a coloured person such as in home and away. no, i don't watch it, never have, never will, but that's what some are saying.

There is a xenophobic percentage of Australians. Unfortunately the conservative politicians get a fair bit of mileage out of stirring up racial tension. The last political party in Australia was very much like that (think of all white, rich, christian, middle aged men) and they put into place some fairly divisive policies.
They ran a smear campaign against refugees/asylum seekers and then locked them all up in the desert (Australian deserts are pretty nasty). They had laws designed to target the indigenous population, who are already way overrepresented in our prisons. They jumped at the chance to join Bush in Iraq.

They got voted out, but the truth is that there is a nasty undercurrent in our population who voted them in in the first place.

Right now there are problems with Indian students being targeted for assaults. Several years ago there was a race-riot.

Things are far from perfect here, and truth be told it's embarrassing.

But I compare it to the rest of the world and we are doing comparitively better than 95% of the rest of the planet. Which probably says more about how shitty the rest of the world is than it does about how well we are doing.
