Pick one lightheavyweight to fight Jack Johnson

    If you could pick one 175'er, who would it be and more important, why?

    Mind you: 25 rounds, small gloves, sadistic referee.

    How 'bout...'ole Sam from Boston. 25 rounds... sure. Small gloves...Yes Sir.
    Sadistic referee...No problem at all.
    Sam would have been more than happy I believe, to get his rematch!

    Langford would have a decent chance under these circumstances but would probably get mauled out.

    Foster would have a chance, but if he didn't take Johnson out in 9 or 10 (and I don't think he would) he'd get mauled out.

    I have decided to choose - Kid Norfolk. But I still think he'd lose.

    I don't know BD...Moore is so dangeros because he is so clever and so instinctively correct about his man's moves.


    These are the areas where Johnson, too, excels. So I have to ask, given the difference in size and power, what advantages does Moore actually hold?

    Problably so, McGrain...But he would have been...oh...so motivated!
    I had the chance to see film of Norfolk and Bill Tate...While being strong and very aggressive, Norfolk would play right into Johnson's hands in that match-up IMO.
    If really forced to pick a light heavyweight to win under CP's rules...I believe I'd go with Ezzard Charles or Micheal Spinks...but it would be hell for the lighter men under those circumstances against Johnson. I'm not sure Johnson can be beat with this rule set with a light heavy.

    Peak Johnson may be close to unbeatable by any heavyweight under this ruleset.

    I wonder how Greb would do?

    Good choice, he was very crafty and would give Johnson a lot to think about. I also read about fellow fighters commenting on how incredibly strong Moore was, strongest at his gym despite several bigger heavyweights being there. He's gonna need that physical strength against a guy like Johnson.

    My choice would be Ezzard Charles. Great all-round fighter and i think his counter punching would give Jack problems, who often came in with one punch and then grabbed... i can see Charles taking a step back, avoiding the punch and coming back with a left hook..to name something....

    Don't know if he'd win though, it's hard to imagine Johnson losing under that ruleset, especially to a lightheavyweight.

    Bob Foster would definitely be interesting with small gloves...

    Guy damned near got the same reaction out of Ali as when Shavers whacked him. Buckled knees and clowning.

    Scary stuff.
