As we all know, there were 5 fights dubbed "fight of the century", Ali vs Frazier 1, Gans vs Nelson 1, Johnson vs Jeffries, Mayweather vs Pacquiao, and Dempsey vs Carpentier. Today I challenge you to create your own 5 fights of the century, ones that deserve it more. Bareknuckle fights are allowed

    1. Joe Louis vs Max Schmeling 2
    2. Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier 3
    3. John L Sullivan vs Jake Kilrain
    4. Marvin Hagler vs Tommy Hearns
    5. Joe Walcott vs Ezzard Charles 3

With honorable mentions going to Tyson vs Douglas, Marciano vs Walcott 1, Nelson vs Wolgast 2, Greb vs Tunney 1, Dempsey vs Tunney 2, LaMotta vs Robinson 2&6, Marciano vs Charles 1&2, and Foreman vs Moorer

Are we supposed to define our own century? Yours seems to date either from 1889 to 1989 or 1885 to 1985, depending on whether you start with Sullivan-Kilrain or end with Hagler-Hearns. Don't most people date "the century" from one millenium to another? Seems like we should define our parameters and start out on the same page. On the other hand, if we are just talking loosely about fights that people over time have considered "the Greatest Fight of the Century" rather than the actual greatest fight of a defined 100-year period, I guess it doesn't matter.

By what criteria? Fights that were most notable after the fact?

I agree that the criteria is a little cloudy...so I will just go with the 5 I rewatch over and over:

    Sanchez vs Nelson
    Holyfield vs Qawi I
    Frazier vs Ali I
    Arguello vs Pryor I
    Louis vs Schmeling I

It's just what you think deserves the title more than the real fights of the century

Basically what are the 5 greatest fights of all time, both from historical, popularity, and quality perspective

Shouldn't they be from different centuries? :p

1600's a Butcher Vs the Duke of Albemarle's footman
1700's Jack Slack Vs William Stevens
1800's Tom Crib Vs Tom Molineaux I
1900's Joe Gans Vs Battling Nelson
2000's Floyd Mayweather Jr. Vs Manny Pacquaio

And uh, I'll have to look up for an ancient one:
    500BC's Glaukos Olympic win

    By this, I'd go

1700: Gentleman John Jackson vs Daniel Mendoza
1800: John L Sullivan vs Jake Kilrain
1900: Joe Louis vs Max Schmeling 2
2000: Me vs whoever wins AJ vs Fury vs Wilder (jk probably Lewis vs Vitali or Gatti vs Ward)

My knowledge of anything past fails me

Just to make it even more clear

YOU DONT HAVE TO PICK A CENTURY, just pick the best fights that should replace the current 5. I don't hear anyone complaining about Johnson vs Jeffries and Ali vs Frazier taking place in the same century

    In seriousness maybe something like:
Tom Crib Vs Tom Molineaux I
    Joe Gans Vs Battling Nelson
    Battling Nelson Vs Ad Wolgast
Jersey Joe Walcott Vs Rocky Marciano
    Marvin Hagler Vs Tommy Hearns
