I do not think it is delirium at all. The fact is Hagler never fought Hearns again after that fight, and he did not seem in a hurry to want to fight him regardless of the reason. He would have earned another 5 million and it would have been another big fight. Merchant saying Hagler looked slow doesn't mean much, the fact is Marvin knocked out Hamsho in 3, and Hamsho was a decent fighter. Marvin had to warm up in that fight a little, and once he got mad after one of Hamsho's headbutts Marvin went into his sharper fighting mode. As for Hamsho, in those years beating an up and coming Czyz and also beating Benitez after he fought Hagler for the first time was impressive. As for Mugabi, that was not a great fight for Hagler. Hagler fought Mugabi after he was off for a almost a year, and then when he fought Leonard he was off for more than one year. So being rusty and inactive were facts, not just my opinions of him not being sharp. If you want to talk about commentator comments, for the Mugabi fight Gil Clancy and (Thomas Hearns -who was ringside and adding in comments) said Marvin's left was not as straight as it normally was and it was looping, insinuating that he was not sharp and rusty. Both commented on Marvin's looping left. Hagler at that point did not seem motivated anymore in my view. I had that feeling that night and even up to the Leonard fight. I honestly think after Hearns he reached where he wanted to be and he didn't have his heart in boxing as much, that is why it was easy for him to walk away after Leonard. He was going to walk away anyway.

I agree with this post.It was obvious in the Roldan fight that Hagler was slipping.But you originally inferred that Marvin was specifically avoiding Hearns in a proposed rematch.

I don't think Hagler was slipping. I remember the 2nd Hamsho fight and I thought Marvin looked very good in that fight using his boxing ability and southpaw stance until Hamsho headbutted him. Roldan was a hard style for anyone including Hearns. The knockdown was a pulldown and Roldan eventually lost. Remember when Hagler fought Roldan he was only 29. Slipping? I don't think so, and beating Hearns showed he still had what it took. I think he his decline after Hearns was mental and not physical. He chased the big time fighters so long and Leonard specifically, then he got Hearns and put his all into it. Ray succeeded in fighting a diminished Hagler that is for sure, but a win is a win. I doubt Ray would have beaten the Hagler who fought Hearns. I am pretty sure he would not have.

Honestly, I don't think Marvin wanted the rematch. I could tell from comparing his attitude before the first Hearns fight and other fights, that he really didn't want it. I wouldn't say he was scared as much as he knew that to get to the point where he brawled with Hearns and put in that kind of energy in round one he had to get angry and into a state of physical and mental preparedness which he probably didn't know if he could again. He knew in a rematch it would be a slower fight and the fight people thought it would be in the first fight. I think he knew he put his all out and won and didn't want to go through it again. Not scared but just not anxious to redo something he did so well in the first time in a great fight.

I also think he really didn't want to fight much anymore. He seemed to want that fame Leonard had and he reached it after Hearns with the Pizza Hut and Coke commercials and the deodorant commercial where he says something like "one doesn't want to be considered malodorus by ones chums" I forget the commercial but remember the line. He reached what he wanted and his motivation for fighting went down. I saw him enough in that time to see it. The last person to fight a motivated Hagler was Hearns. In reality Hagler probably should have retired after Hearns. Hearns on the other hand always had motivation always as did Duran who like Hearns fought into the 1990s and 2000s decade. They didn't need that sort of think like Leonard and Hagler.

Roldan was consistently landing on Hagler.And Martillo was not known for his handspeed.It was obvious that Hagler's reflexes and footspeed were slowing down.But if you don't believe that,whatever.We're all entitled to our opinions.As far as Hamsho was concerned,it wasn't as if Mustafa was ever a speed demon anyway.The age factor really isn't an issue when it comes to that fight as Hagler had more than 60 fights up to that point.As far as his beating Tommy,all it proves is that he was the tougher man.It doesn't get any simpler than that.

Marvin's approach to that fight was not simple in my mind. He put his all out in that fight mentally and physically because he wanted it. Also, Marvin was a natural middleweight, but I do believe that a slower paced fight where Tommy can land his right means Hagler gets hurt. I was surprised that Tommy hurt Hagler so early in that fight,even though Marvin left himself open. Tommy without a broken right hand means Hagler gets rocked with many Hearns rights. The problem for Hearns is Hagler did have a solid chin and a strong head, so Hearns could have broken his hand again had he hit him hard like the first fight. As for Roldan, Roldan was not a slow fighter. He hit Hearns with big punches rather easily, and he demolished Kinchen. Gave Nunn a decent fight. He just could not take what he dished out but I never thought the Roldan fight was proof Marvin was washed up. It is proof that Roldan made anyone look bad. The top guys always beat him, but in todays world he would have won a title. Had he fought a guy like JCC Jr. he would have won I think by mid round knockout.

Hearns has been a massive credit to himself and the sport for decades. Never read a single story about him beating people up in the street, getting drunk, taking drugs or generally acting the *****. Take a bow Tommy, pure class :good

Tommy buzzed Marvin,but I believe Marvin was never in trouble,except of course in the last round(due to the cut)when the ref checked the cut even though Tommy didn't buzz Hagler after the 1st round.By the end of the 1st round,Tommy was the one in trouble.I dunno which Roldan you've seen,but the one I saw was on the slow side.He was awkward,but slow.And I never wrote that Hagler was "washed up"(your words) in the Roldan fight.I wrote that there was obvious evidence of slippage.Where you got my saying Marvin was "washed up" in that fight,I've no idea as I've never written or said that.
