What have i stated that’s bs? He also wasn’t 40 against Qawi, Holmes, Moorer. Simply stated Holyfield struggled (not that he’d lose every time just struggled) with smaller defensive/counter punchers and id add more so then people whom were simply larger then he was. Which seems to be the end all be all on this site.
I’ll also add Holyfield being sick has nothing to do with the fact that he didn’t perform well against counter punchers. He liked people coming at him.

    I'm curious.
Do you know what the popular opinion of the time was about whether Marciano had defeated Liston or vice versa? thanks

Generally related, look up the poster known as Burt bienstock, and his old posts. He was the oldest on here - saw guys like Ike Williams and co. live. He is at least in his 90s.

He also talked about Marciano, so there may be something there.

You know what don’t comment on my posts. You’re to emotional and all over the place. You can’t stay on topic and are constantly bemoaning others on nonsensical points that have nothing to do with said post. I even said it’s not about losing it’s about STRUGGLING. I appreciate your posts because they’re knowledgeable at times but sometimes I think you just like yelling at the wind. I wish you good luck.

Thank you check this foubd on some What If random boxing syte and it is good analyse of fighting!
LET’S SETTLE THIS IN THE RING

The size differential is noticeable early as Liston looks mammoth compared to Marciano. Both fighters open up cautiously over the first minute of the fight, each respectful of his adversary’s punching power. Liston begins to work his jab and Rocky’s nose is already bloodied by the close of the first round. Liston controls the second round as well as Rocky has no answers for the powerful and long Liston jab. With 30 seconds remaining in the round, Liston finds Marciano with a crushing left hook which sends him to the canvas. Rocky rises at the count of 7. Marciano is seriously hurt but manages to survive the round.

By the third round, barely a whisper can be heard from the Fenway crowd as their hometown hero is absorbing a savage beating. Rocky is now suffering from a nasty cut over the left eye as he continues to eat a steady diet of jabs and power shots from Sonny. A Liston right rocks Marciano again as the round comes to a close. Liston continues to dominate in round four but now has a bewildered look on his face which seems to say: “I’ve hit this guy with everything but the ring post, how is he still standing?” Rocky is nothing if not courageous as he keeps coming forward in the face of severe punishment. Marciano lands his first telling blow late in the round, a terrific right which stuns Liston and backs him up.
Liston looks tired and frustrated as he comes out for the 5th round. Marciano just continues to come forward and is starting to find the range with his power shots. Marciano lands a wicked left to Sonny’s ribcage which causes him to visibly wince as the round comes to a close. Marciano continues to gain momentum over the first two minutes of round 6. However, Liston catches him coming in with a thunderous right late in the round. Marciano’s legs quiver. Sonny pursues him to the ropes, however, Marciano fires back catching Liston with a big left hook which backs him off as the round comes to a close.

By the start of round 7, Marciano is fully recovered and continues to effectively pressure a tiring Liston. However, by the end of the round, his face is becoming a bloody mask from the cut over his left eye. By the middle of the 8th, Marciano can barely see. Liston tries to finish him landing brutal power shots but Marciano refuses to fall. Liston shakes his head in disbelief as he returns to the corner.

Rocky’s corner is unable to stem the tide of blood between rounds. His manager, Al Weill, tells Marciano he has only one more round and better get it done! With Weill’s edict ringing in his ears, a determined Marciano comes out for round 9. Liston lands a number of power shots early in the round, however, they lack the steam they had early in the fight. Rocky is simply walking through them. With 1:00 remaining Marciano lands a tremendous overhand right which sends Liston to the canvas. An ecstatic Fenway crowd screams wildly! Liston rises at the count of 7 but looks defeated and exhausted. One final left hook followed with right uppercut closes the show dropping Sonny to the canvas again. Liston doesn’t even try to get up. Marciano has pulled off an improbable knockout victory!

    Marciano wins KO 9!

Let’s be honest here, some of Rocky’s more rabid fans would pick him to beat a man with an AK 47.

The Rock would shake off the damage and walk his armed opponent down despite eating lead.

That post by Serbian loudmouth is very typical. Pure fantasy which is fair enough but it’s just that. Fantasy.

Liston along with a young Foreman and a prime Mike Tyson would be the absolute worst match up possible for Rocky out of all the pre 2000 champions. Rocky was decked by the likes of Walcott and Moore.

How the hell is a small, slow swarmer ( smaller than anyone who has since held the title in over 50 years since ) with good power going to get through the kind of fire that the guys I mentioned would throw at Rocky ?

Foreman and Tyson also have heads like concrete unlike all the fighters Rocky faced at championship level. Walcott, Charles, Moore and Cockell are not top level as far as heavyweight chins and durability go ( unlike Marciano who did have a gigantic heart and an excellent beard facing guys his own size ).

I used to enjoy ESB before it was invaded by all these Marciano zealots over the last few years. It just isn’t that enjoyable anymore.

In my opinion there are now way too many heavyweight threads, way too many threads that include active fighters and WAY too many Marciano threads.

    Cheers All.

As has been the case with quite a few titleholders, it was conjectured after he won and defended the title so convincingly against Patterson that he was among the all-time greats. This feeling disappeared quickly after he lost to Ali. Liston's glowing period was very short and he had only one successful title defense. I don't recall that the discussion about his greatness was around long enough to mature into a series of sub-discussions about how he would do against any particular past heavyweight. Frankly, he was regarded as a disappointment, especially since the boxing establishment did not regard Ali very highly at the time. It is a relatively recent phenomenon that a number of enthusiastic posters on this and other forums have dug up his grave and resurrected him into an all-time great. That is my take on the issue, anyway.

Liston is a top 12 to 15 ATG because of his fighting style, ferocity, terrific (pre-Foreman and Tyson) intimidation tactics, and for having one of the 5 greatest left jabs in history (only guys like Ali, Holmes, Louis, and Bowe were better in that dept...Foreman isn't far away).
Watch him in the 50s, he was fantastic. He was more than menacing and formidable shortly before his death (yeah, he crashed and burned some...so did Tyson). He even scared the hell out of a just-turning-pro George Foreman, and massively influenced both his jab and stare down tactics.

Sonny isn't considered great partly because no one would fight him at his best (in the late 50s, very early 60s). Shoot, Patterson didn't want to fight him, and Johansson somehow snuck out of it, too.

I wasn't around at the time but I would assume the majority thought (rightly or wrongly) Rocky was better and would win H2H

Marciano in his prime would KO Listen in 5. Here, Rock has to put him away earlier which he is more than capable of. An All time great v an all time very good
