Not sure if this has been done before, but how would a prime Pierre Coetzer do against today's heavyweights in your opinion? I just finished his fight with Riddick Bowe, and I personally think that he would do quite well with his size (especially if he bulked up a bit) and strength. From what I have seen of him, he was a pretty decent heavyweight who would fare much better against today's crop of heavyweights. There is always the argument that he never beat a top heavyweight of his day, but then again, most heavyweights these days aren't built like they were back then.

He'd be a punching bag for top HWs, just like he was in the early 90s

He was no punching bag, Holmes ducked him for a reason, and it was nothing to do with SSouth Africa. He moved well besides being able to slug. He was always hindered by reporters demanding him to answer questions on his countries policies, and protestors dogging him, as if he set his nations policy. Aside from VItali, who he would do good against, he beats about anyone. He'd beat Chambers, Povetkin, Arreola. Vlad would be tough.

I think you are thinking of Gerrie Coetzee. And, in regard to him, I would agree. He was a much better fighter than Coetzer.

Coetzee hit like a mule, and I agree, would have given Holmes a good fight.

Coetzer, however, would have taken a beating, just like he did against any decent fighter.

As I recall Coetzer was 6'4" but only about 212lbs. Just too small for todays heavyweights....

Coetzee is my ATF fighter, and I think he could be a top ten fighter today. But I wouldn't want to see what Wladimir or Vitali would have done to him.

Yes, as I said, he may need to bulk up a bit, but if he did get to say 225-230, I think he would be a force in today's division.

Been seeing some love for Coetzer on the forum lately so thought I would dust this old thread off and see where people stand.

Side note: this thread was originally posted in the classic forum years ago, so not sure why it is in General now. Mods, if you would please move it to Classic, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

The SA heavies from the 80s-90s were all a blast to watch. Except for Botha they were pretty much all glass cannons who always put on a show, not slating Botha here but he certainly wasn't the biggest of punchers. Sanders, Coetzer, Coetzee, du Plooy and even some of the lesser regarded guys (who's name's I can't recall off the top of my head) could crack. Oh yeah... They all had killer mustaches as well!

Coetzer was pretty decent, he was always ready to go the distance, had a good chin, a high workrate, decent accuracy and the best moustache in HW history!

Only problem with Coetzer was that he didn't hit particularly hard and that his idea of defence was to block punches with his bigass chin. He was also a bit of a bleeder.

I think he'd be solid nowadays, a cut above the usual journeymen, with the ability to pop the bubble of an A-lister that took him lightly. So, I reckon he'd be able to maybe win a belt, but not be able to keep it for any length of time. He'd probably be able to take out somebody like Wilder who has a suspect chin, and maybe outwork your Stivernes and slower HW's. But the really big guys with a punch would be problematic.

I don't see him having much success against hard hitting tough guys like Povetkin. Wlad would out-strategy him and beat him to a pulp with his jab. AJ might well KO him. Parker would be interesting ... if Parker was lacking condition he might find himself outworked. But then, Parker is green.

He'd certainly be in the top ten on for years. Though he would never be the sort of fighter to a keep a dominant streak for any actual length of time. A good fighter, but could blow hot or cold, though he always gave it his absolute best.

I expect him to have been around what he was back then. Always around, never able to beat a big name.
