Anyone know much about this Frenchman? Caught some highlights of his fights with Olson and Giardello recently...Looks like he has a good record at the peak of his career, holding Basilio to a draw and close decision loss..Losing an apparently controversial decision to Gil Turner..Upsetting Giardello...Beat and drew with a lot of decent contenders of the time. Also interesting to see he spent a year in Australia as a youngster...Losing for the most part but getting some close decisions and impressing the pundits down under from what Ive read. Looked bull strong with a good left hand from whats on offer on da Tube. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptFGdTiSgZg[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NURscocE7xI[/ame]
I've seen his bouts with Basilio and highlights from his fights with Giardello. Thought he actually edged the first Basilio fight, but lost the second one close but clear. Strong fighter with very good boxing skills. Type of guy that could easily clean jnr/middleweight today.
I have highlights of his fight with Ollsen and he reasonably impressed me, but Olssen did look real good in it, but I am an Ollsen fan. Been a while since I watched it though.
pierre langlois came along just after the war in a slew of decent and great french middles including cerdan, humez, dauthille and villemain.he mixed in good company. he was also involved in the french resistance during the war
Langlois fought here in the US a lot and had a rep for giving the top Americans close, tough fights, and often losing close, disputed decisions. He lost close, disupted decisions to Giardello (in their first fight) and Gil Turner, among others, and was held to a draw by Basilio in Basilio's hometown. He was a fairly quick and skilled fighter, but was also very tough and gutty, and readily mixed it on the inside. His defining win was probably his upset of Giardello in their rematch, at a time when Giardello was very highly regarded and in line for a title shot. Langlois is the only fighter I've ever actually seen floor Giardello as well. Langlois' lone title shot came when Giardello (who somehow had been given the next title shot despite his loss to Langlois) injured his knee in a car accident. Langlois substituted for Giardello against champion Bobo Olson, and gave Olson a pretty decent fight, but Olson was generally better throughout and ended up stopping Langlois on cuts. After that, his career seemed to fizzle out and he faded away.
I saw Pierre Langois fight 4 or 5 times at Eastern Pkwy Arena, NY. I watched Langois lose a decision to Joey Giardello in 1952...A good looking tough boxer who gave his all in every fight, but was just a little short of championship calibre. the middleweight competition was so tough in the early 1950s, but Langois was a tough bird and today would be fighting for the JR. Middleweight title...
