Does anybody else feel any discomfort when throwing the right hook? I've never felt anything similar when throwing any other punch but for some reason the right hook seems to do it for me. I started doing a little bit of rotator cuff exercise so I'm hoping that it will help. Any other advice?
I'm very surprised as I thought there would be many responses by now. So can I assume this is an uncommon problem for fighters throwing the right hook (orthodox)?
can't give you any advice on that.. right hooks have always been fine for me although I don't throw them as much as my left hook. are you an orthodox? that would explain why it might be awkward but it shouldn't be painful..
It does feel a bit akward while throwing it because I have to extend a bit further than my left hook. I believe this may have caused a strain in the shoulder.
A pinch like a pinched nerve? I'm an orthodox and throwing my right hooks are fine. I had a pinched nerve in my trap a while back and some time off, stretching and the such helped it, and it doesn't bother me anymore. I'm not sure if thats what you mean but any uncomfort while throwing a punch, if your throwing it correctly, isn't good.
Maybe "pinch" was the wrong word. It feels more like muscle soreness in which I believe is my rotator cuff.
Watch shoulder pain. I had the same problem for bout 2 years and thought nothin of it and that in time it wud go away. Iv been out injured for 5 months and i am goin thru physiotherapy for both my shoulders.
Just curious. How often do you land those right hooks? From an orthodox stance, I sometimes throw right hooks but I swear almost ALL of them miss. I'm thinking of just sticking with straight rights. While I don't have shoulder problems from throwing right hooks, I do have some pain on my left shoulder when I throw left hooks. When I work the heavy bag, I just concentrate on throwing short fast hooks instead of trying to really drive my knuckles into the bag. It's not as painful now and I think my left hooks are much sharper because I changed the way I throw them. My only suggestion is to rest your shoulder and let it heal. You'll be back at throwing those right hooks in no time assuming you actually didn't tear anything. If the pain persists after 2-3 weeks of rest, it might be time to go see a doctor. I've heard horror stories about shoulder injuries, you really don't want to rush into things and make them worse.
See a physiotherapist and do what he/she says. When your done with re-hab ask he/she about a preventative maintenance program and do it.
