"Pink Thomas-Tim Spoon" was a 1984 snoozer WBC title fight in my book...

I agree on this one...it could have been a classic , but bonecrusher didn,t want to fight ...only in the dying seconds he tried to knock Tyson out....way too late though

I liked that fight. Douglas was boxing really good, great jab. Tucker was massive puncher though.

I remember this fight well. As a matter of fact the thing I got out of it at the time was that Holmes had vacated the title and that Witherspoon was trying to make the fight legit or to be seen as a legitimate title fight since Holmes was considered the real champion at the time and had been given the IBF title. Maybe someone can correct me on the specific facts in all this. I think Witherspoon was distracted in this fight because of that issue and others. Tim had great potential but there was a mental limitation to him which a great like Larry Holmes did not have. And he needed all his skills against a guy with a jab like Pinklon Thomas.

I dont know what Spoons deal was he reigned twice and each time looked horrible losing the belt

he came in vs Bonecrusher when defending and looked flat look like he didnt even have a sweat going

never had a moment and got blown out of the water early

Tim Witherspoon was a good fighter, and I thought he was the guy who could have beaten Mike Tyson had they fought from 1986-1989 since he was big and had a good chin and a big right hand, but Tim never had the mental toughness to have a long reign. He was the better of the 2nd rate 1980's heavyweights like Tubbs, Thomas,Tucker, Bonecrusher etc. He was the guy between Tyson and Holmes and those guys. like the intermediate level, and what made him not in the Tyson/Holmes level was his inconsistency.

I don't think it was fixed. Tim was cold and uninspired like he could be, and Bonecrusher was dangerous early. Look how Bonecrusher stopped Weaver.

no way. I remember that fight. Bonecrusher landed big right hand punches on Tim. It was not as though those were grazing punches, he landed solid punches and Tim was caught early and never recovered. That fight is the story of Tim's career. And had he won the fight he would have had the fight with Mike Tyson in March like Bonecrusher got to fight Mike. He blew it due to being unfocused and unprepared as was the normal thing with Tim in some fights. great skills but inconsistent.

The " fight with Tyson " was never going to happen... And Smith landing big shots on Spoon, was because Tim let him do so. This topic has been covered to death....

even if that cold and dry version of spoon got the victory how would he have done vs tyson

i mean if he is inconsistent and doesnt have it all between the ears how would he really fair vs the best version of tyson

I don't know. Bonecrusher hit so hard I don't think Tim would have let him hit him that clean. Bonecrusher hit him like he was chopping down a tree. All power. Those were not grazing punches which one would think of as a fix. Once Tim was hurt, all Bonecrusher had to do was keep throwing and that is what happened. I was watching that fight live and to be honest I was surprised since Tim had beaten him before.

I think he could have done well. I loved Mike as a fighter, but I was worried about Witherspoon. I was actually worried about Bonecrusher a little also since he could punch, but Tim worried me because in shape and inspired he was a big heavyweight who had a big right hand and he had a good chin. Mike to that point never fought a guy that big who could put it all together. And I don't think Tim would come in with Tyson as uninspired as he did with Bonecrusher. But I think you might be right as far as King knew Tim was good and might not of let the fight happen.

Spoon was not raw or green by Aug. 1984 when he pissed his newfound WBC title away to Thomas on HBO..... Spoon was coming off a sketchy 1983 points loss to Holmes and a mild upset win over Page to claim the vacant WBC belt in March '84..... Who's to say WTF team Spoon was thinking the night he fought like a zombie against a well tuned Pinky Thomas... However, credit to Thomas for showing some fine boxing skills that one hot August night of 1984..... I thought Thomas would be the future bad-ass, but his career was short-lived...
