Twenty eight years on and many (not all, eh Don?) of the characters have changed, but the questions posed in the article still have relevance.

The Heavyweight Championship Election: Pinklon Thomas' campaign for the top spot.

    i read it all .

i had their fight a clear 120-118 in favor of Witherspoon . i only watched it once but i remember clearly : i had d 1st 2rds 10-9 in favor of Witherspoon and d rest even . Thomas' jab only prevented him from (clearly) losing d rest , because d only (or at least d vast majority) effective power punches during d fight came from Witherspoon .

Thomas did have a hell of a jab on him, would've loved to see him test it vs Holmes'...good read.

Congrats, you are the only person in the universe that scored it for Witherspoon. Tim's mother, who had him beating Holmes by 5 points, had Thomas winning by one.

10 rounds even? Is that even possible?

Anyway, I thought Pinklon was going to be better than he turned out to be. In 1984 at least I thought he had a real shot of beating Holmes.

Very simple , when no1 wins a rd , it is scored even . And that is what happpened with rds 3-12 of d Pinklon Thomas vs Tim Witherspoon fight .

I sparred one round with Pink during his bum-of-the-week tour in 1992.

He was well past it, no doubt, but was passing through and dropped by the local gym for a light workout. I was about 175 pounds and he agreed to step in for a round just for fun.

He could have taken me out at any time, no doubt, but mostly played defense and flicked a jab here and there. With about 30 seconds to go, I threw a right jab (I'm a southpaw) and caught him with his eye open. He took half a step back and blinked a couple of times and got a different look on his face. I thought "Oh ****, I've done it now." He stepped in pretty hard and I instinctively threw my left as hard as I could throw it -- and he ducked under it and hit me a right to the body and I coudln't breathe. I stayed up but I was a dead man walking. He then hit me a right hand on the jaw that darned near tore my head off and the bell rang -- while my bell continued to ring.

It seemed like he was going after me from my perspective, but those outside told me he let me off the hook and just popped me a couple of times to establish who was boss, that he could have destroyed me after the body shot -- which I'm sure was true.

He came over to make sure I was OK and posed for pictures and complimented me on my jab. Super nice guy.

For about two weeks after, every time I opened my mouth I could feel the back of my left jaw click. It didn't swell up, but it was mighty sore and I couldn't chew with that side of my mouth. I figured the jaw must have been broken and was going to go see a doctor when it stopped clicking and just kind of went away.

I still have a picture stuck to my refrigerator commemorating the experience. Always liked him as a fighter before I met him, but remain a Pink fan for that experience. I can honestly say I lasted one round with a former heavyweight champ, even if it was only through the graces of his kindness to let me finish it.
