Rewatched his fight with Tyson again today and got to wondering, how would he fare if he fought in todays era? He was tall, had a very good jab, had a VERY good chin which was evident in the Tyson fight, and fast hands. He was inconsistent though due to drugs so you didn't know which Thomas was going to show up.

I would pick Thomas to beat guys like Chageav, Peter, Ruiz, Virchis, Ibragimov without much hesitation. Valuev would be interesting due to Valuevs massive size, and I'll wait until I read some posts before I post a prediction on Wlad-Thomas.

Alpha champion and repeat contender, but not a domineering force...

Thomas was in the top ten pound for pound rankings for a time, he was a very good fighter when on his A game.

Too bad he was more often on his H or C game.

Or are we to suppose these problems would not follow him to today's supposedly depleted era?

Aww come on - he was a decent consistent fighter for a good 4 year stretch.

He was quite talented, just like Tucker, Dokes and Tubbs. All talented guys whose potentials were unrealized because of serious drug problems. This factor has to be considered when measuring them against other fighters.

He did realise his potential for 4 years or so tho. As a matter of fact he was a very good fighter right up until he lost his crown. 5 or 6 excellent years.

Yes, he'd be at or near the top of the division for quite a while and be ranked in the top3 along with Wlad, Chagaev, Peter, Valuev, etc. Thomas is one of the better fighters never to win the linear title.

How do you guys seeing him doing against the top guys today? Meaning 1. Wlad, 2. Peter, 3. Chageav, 4. Povetkin and David Haye?

Firstly, Haye has proven nothing at HW so throw him out.

He loses to the overwhelming offense of Wlad, the dynamic activity and movement of Chagaev and Povetkin but troubles and possibly beats Peter.

Could he beat any of these guys on the right night? Sure. But so could Marvin Hart.

Thomas' great win-streak was primarily over under-achievers and seriously flawed heavies so let's get too carried away.

Had a great Jab and a solid right hand , he was a force at his best and would shock a few cats today.. Wladimir would struggle with the power and slick movement.. He wouldn't just fall out after a few slaps...
