This vid is a pleasure...Thomas wasn't a great fighter,...but he sure had a great left... This content is protected
Yeah,of all the 80s heavyweights that came up during Holmes reign, Thomas should have been the one that succeeded him as the next dominant heavyweight especially after beating an in shape Witherspoon for the title and knocking out Weaver but long spells of inactivity and maybe years of past drug use seems to catch up with him after that though Berbick still has to be credited for a fine performance to take the title away from him. At his best had a slower but much heavier jab than Holmes and had a solid chin as well as good power. I can see why the aging Holmes wanted no part of him.
Well I know Thomas had shoulder problems against Mike Tyson but I don't know if that plagued him after that. In any case he was a pretty damn solid fighter in his prime. Not great but still damn good. Much better than anybody Wlad fought doing his title run and I would say much better skilled wise than guys like AJ. Clearly he had a better chin. As Tyson landed numerous flush punches to stop him.
I sure liked Pinklon Thomas...liked everything about him...it's a shame he ended up getting utterly destroyed against Tyson like he did.
Pink was a good fighter, but a bit overrated. Didn't fight all of the top comp, but during his brief time at the top, could have taken Holmes, which Larry knew, and possibly Tubbs.
Thomas was from Pontiac, Michigan which is 20-30 minutes outside of Detroit. A lot of his family still lived there. His dad died back in 2014 at the age of 100. He was born the same year as Joe Louis.
Thomas had a very good overall skillset, with his educated left being the centerpiece. Unfortunately he didn't have quite enough assertiveness to maximize his talent. This showed in the fight with Coetzee, when he probably could have scored a late knockout, and in the fight with Berbick, who he shouldn't have lost to.
