Yes, if I remember rightly Dokes imprisoned and beat his woman so bad that he probably deserves to rot in jail. The Holyfield fight was a bitter painful fight to lose like that, Dokes really gave it his all and came close to winning. Excellent effort. Still, it didn't destroy his career. It raised his credibility as a contender. There was talk of Tyson-Dokes soon afterwards, for mid-to-late '89. The Ruddock fight was a bit of a bad break too. Ruddock threw the best punch of his life. That's heavyweight boxing for you.
You know Thomas didn't pace himself vs Trevor and ended up getting tired and Trevor took advantage of it. First 5 rounds were at a fast pace and Thomas ended up getting tired.
I have always been puzzled by that also. I saw all the heavyweight fights of the 80's. Did Witherspoon not use the the "cross arm" defense against Thomas, like he did Holmes? I can't recall. To this I still can't figure out how Thomas lost to Berbick.
Inside Story on Pinklon he was a very talented guy but after he won the title he started fiddling with the heroin again & was full time before the Berbick fight, I knew a guy that was close with his cousin & that was what I was told. That would explain his lackluster loss to Berbick (who he should have defeated easily) I think everyone was shocked but the former heroin addict went back on, the boxing $$$$ gave him too much financial freedom to screw up
He was also making an album and other things, instead of concentrating on boxing. And lets face it, Berbick was supposed to be a soft defense for him. But for Trevor, his career was pretty much on the line and a loss to Thomas would have set him way back. But he rose to the occasion & looked good in the fight. Just so many of this group of heavies lost whenever they had their B game. Only Holmes could show up with his B game and pull out the win. The rest of the guys seem to just drop off the table whenever they were less than 100%.
Spoon looks bad here. Weight down but looks bad. I think an off night for him. To me he's a better fighter than Thomas
I saw it live on CBS at the time. Thomas won the battle of jabs. That was the key. Neither guy had fast feet. They stood in front of other and traded jabs. The guy who landed the jab first gained control in the exchanges. Thomas was that guy more often than Witherspoon.
Thomas outjabbed Witherspoon who outjabbed Holmes a lot in their fight. If Thomas could outjab Holmes he would probably win, although Larry was resourceful and would probably try different tactics if the jab was not working. Since Holmes and Thomas would have fought in the '83-85 time frame, I give Pinky and excellent shot at beating Holmes. Prime for prime? yeah, probably Holmes would win but by the time they could have fought, Holmes was slipping.
Thomas was a very good fighter, but had drug problems. Someone mentioned the Tyson fight, well Thomas took a serious serious beating ugly KO. He was in good shape for that fight working with Dundee. It was a great win for Tyson. Thomas was an underachiever good boxer, Spoon in my opinion was the overated one.
I don't know if Spoon was truly overrated, maybe a tad, but when you're beefing with Don King, that takes a lot of your motivation. Like Mitch Green and Greg Page, but those two had problems even before Don King.
